RIP Owen. Once a Miller
Everyone at Rotherham United is heartbroken to learn of the passing of young supporter Owen Jenkinson following a truly courageous battle with cancer.
While our immediate thoughts are those of incredible sadness, even in such tragic circumstances, it is crucial that we do not lose sight of the awe-inspiring way in which he lived his life and the lessons he taught us all, which belied his tender years and he would want us to continue to uphold as the pillars of his legacy.
Owen’s attitude throughout an impossibly difficult journey moved us all.
He faced challenges that no young person should ever have to, approached each day with an outlook on life which meant he was determined to make the most of every moment and he smiled in the face of even the greatest adversity.
It wasn’t just a brave front he put on either – and every person lucky enough to spend time in his presence will attest to that.
His positivity was genuine and pure and it was as a direct result of that outlook, coupled with the unwavering support of a family who were right there with him every step of the way, that he made it his mission to ensure that his illness did not define him.
Owen will be remembered as the beacon of hope that the life that he created for himself represented.
The fact that he was an intelligent young man, a good footballer, a hugely-loved brother, son and friend only added to the many reasons that those close to him adored him and the wider public wanted to be there for him.
From fundraisers with his grassroots team AFC Pogmoor to challenges of endurance and the countless other initiatives that he inspired, his enduring popularity meant that he was never short of support.
The impression that he made on our players and the staff who were fortunate enough to meet him on the final game of last season against Peterborough United, on which he led the teams out with the matchball was immeasurable. Our supporters shared that and everyone inside AESSEAL New York Stadium that day emanated love towards him as he joined in the post-match lap of appreciation. We were genuinely honoured to give him that experience, but really, ended the day grateful to Owen and his family for what they taught us about life and the importance of holding loved ones close and making the most of every minute.
Throughout Owen’s journey we have stayed in touch with the family regarding his progress. His father, Bill, was kind enough to keep us informed of the many challenges that Owen and the family faced but never once looked for sympathy. It isn’t the #TeamJenko way.
What they have faced together has been unthinkably difficult but we have no doubt that their collective strength will help them through as we all come to terms with Owen’s passing.
The Jenkinson messaging from Day One has been consistent. It has been about celebrating the time that we have been lucky enough to enjoy a truly special individual like Owen and that is what we will do.
The heartfelt condolences and every ounce of love of everyone at Rotherham United and our supporters are with the Jenkinson family and all of Owen’s many friends at this unimaginably difficult time.
