Bloody hell. I got to be in the audience once for the Russ n Jono breakfast show on Virgin back in the day, he was a great bloke, just like his broadcast persona. What a shame.
Talking of which I remember we played PAFC one time (75/76?) and their followers had a 'MIGHTY MARINER' flag draped over one of the crush barriers in Kempton.
I hope some will appreciate this... Galileo.... perhaps the greatest stallion in recent times in horse racing, humanely put to sleep with a debilitating foot injury....
Both Trevor Francis and Paul Mariner played in the 1982 world cup. Mariner scored in the 3-1 win over France. Both he and Francis were from Plymouth. That day Bryan Robson scored one of the quickest goals in wc history, then got the second. Mariner got the third. RIP.
John Lawton vocalist unexpectedly...Sad to hear all these musicians I grew up with are leaving us...you start to think of your own mortality!
There was a rumour that we had first refusal on Paul Mariner and another player on the South Coast, can't remember his name, but we gave up the option. In the event both went for more than we would have had to pay. Fine player in a very good Ipswich team. Think Plymouth had just been promoted that season. We won 4-0.I remember talking to some Plymouth fans in the pub who were making a weekend of it.
