Great player. Only 20 in the 1966 final and Sir Alf planned what we did around nullifying him.
Beckenbauer admitted they fell for it in the way we used Bobby Charlton. One of the all time greats respected by his opponents.

Franz Beckenbauer...
RIP
Aged 78...

I got his autograph at Sandwich golf course back in the 90s. Tall guy, well turned out...He played the last 30 mins of the 1970 World Cup SF vs Italy in the Azteca with his broken arm in a sling. Some player.

RIP Franz, I had a pair of Franz Beckenbauer boots at school. Obviously not ones he’d owned.

Strange to think being born in Munich he was a fan of 1860 Munich but joined Bayern Munich who were then an unfashionable club in the second tier. He lead them to promotion after making his debut in 1964 and 10years later to the first of 3 European Cups in a row, the first person to captain a team to 3 European Cups. He was appointed manager of West Germany despite having no experience of coaching or managing ( wonder what the not696 fraternity would have made of that if it had been around then) took them to World Cup final then on to win the next World Cup, one of only 3 managers to win the World Cup as a player and a manager. How sad that his passing means 2 of the 3 have passed away close together.
Giant of the game does not even begin to describe him.

Former Wales and British and Irish Lions full-back JPR Williams has died at the age of 74.

Williams, a fearless player known for his aggressive and attacking style, won 55 Wales caps and started all eight Tests on victorious Lions tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa three years later.

He was revered among fellow Wales greats like Sir Gareth Edwards, Phil Bennett and Gerald Davies, and regarded as one of rugby union's finest players.

The epitome of a Rolls Royce player... RIP Beckenbauer...
Franz…..A gentleman to match Bobby C. RIP

I recall the 1970 World Cup Q/F...England v. W. Germany. We were cruising 2-0 with 20 mins to go....Alf Ramsey took off Bobby Charlton to 'save him for the semi'. Beckenbauer took over...Ran the game from then on. Scored to make it 2-1 when he danced around the England midfield and put in a shot, which Bonetti should have saved easily. From then on it was one way traffic with Beckenbauer leading the charge. They scored again....then got the winner in extra time. Beckenbauer was superb that day. Top player.

iirc, jeff astle replaced bobby charlton and missed a sitter.

Did you know JPR was a surgeon ? And he was a tennis wonderkid apparently - good hands needed for both - and he chose rugby !

Accordingvto the Radio this am

iirc, jeff astle replaced bobby charlton and missed a sitter.
Wasn't that against Brazil? Two yards out. Swung his peg at it, screwed it wide. ....That said he was that crap he might have missed one vs the Germans.
