Everybody join in. Give us a little quiz. I'll start off with a nice easy one. First to answer provides the next quiz. But, if no quiz for an hour, anyone can jump in the driving seat.

Riddles and major Quizzes should have their own thread and contain the word "Riddle" or "Quiz" in the title (as appropriate) and they will be added to the index below

Which was the first British-trained racehorse to win a Breeders' Cup race and where was it. What was special about the performance?

Pebbles indeed it was. What a fantastic filly she was.

Right, I shall claim victor's rights if no one else is going to post a question :emoticon-0105-wink:

42 racecourses in Great Britain have closed since 1900.

Name the 4 that have closed since 1970.

(bonus points if you can name any of the others!)

Alexandra Park Last meeting 8 September 1970
Lanark Last meeting 18 October 1977
Stockton Last meeting 16 June 1981
Wye Last meeting 2 May 1974

Tough, can't think of many but after 1970: Great Leighs, Wye, Stockton (Teeside), Ally Pally.

Before 1970, just a few I can remember: Hurst Park, Manchester (Castle Irwell), Lewes

There are about 45 closed courses in all. Here are some:

It's always useful to know some of these for quiz nights!

Next question to Swanny!

There used to be a racecourse at Tenby but it closed in about 1937, a few years after a betting coup was landed involving a horse called Oyster Maid.

The execution of the coup took the form of the much loved 'lack of available phonebox/phonebox engaged' trope.

Right here is one -

Name the sire who shares his name with a former capital of an old soviet bloc nation, the nation being the one who were are believed to be the first 'men' to domesticate Horses.

Nass: At the moment can only think of Zagreb, although Croatia was part of Jugoslavia when in the Soviet Bloc. The first men to domesticate horses though? I always attributed that to either the *****ls (great horsemen) or maybe the American Indian.........................

Sorry shouldn't have put bloc (deary me, that really was schoolboy)

It is a former capital of a nation that was part of the USSR.

I will go and flog myself for that <laugh>

Ah, then it must be Almaty. Did not know the Kazaks were the first to domesticate the good old horse.......................

Almaty it is. Apparently the first horses were domesticated on the Khazkh steppes, which also suggests that they were some of the first home builders too.
