Very very sad news, remember when he first arrived he seemed to have the most prodigious kick in the world, my then future wife always fancied him too.

I remember him waving to the South stand while gathering up those oranges to put in the goal net. My Dad took me then cos' I was just a kid. Very sad to hear of his passing.

I weren't born when this chap played, but my grandad used to regale me with stories of a goalkeeper of City's who used to get oranges pelted at him.

I take it this is he.

    RIP

A bit of a long shot, but nobody on here has contact details for his family, do they?

As any of the local media outlets carried the sad news.

It's only appeared on message boards so far, the local media are trying to get firm confirmation before running it.

    RIP.

Being in my 20s I never got the chance to see him play, in the grand scheme of City how does Ian stand up with our other keepers?

The thing that stood out most for me was his kick,it wasn't unusual for him to reach the opposition penalty box, it was massive.

It was pretty strange that a thread was started yesterday about Ian too .... He was a legend to me from my first match when i could hardly see over the railings, my dad had a brown paper bag full of oranges and handed them out to his mates who all lobbed em at his goal then the streams of bog rolls been thrown ... Great times. RIP Ian.

Just dug an old scrap book of newspaper picture from the 60's of city and there a great picture of the ref waiting for Ian to clear his penalty box of oranges so he can start the match.

That was my first ever City game.
A colleague of mine who supports Preston North End once told me he did a drop-kick clearance at Deepdale which bounced once and over the bar of the opposite goal.

Really sad news, condolences to his family and friends.

Just back home after a spell in hospital so way behind on all news and now this, first Jock now Ian, he was a funny guy used to joke with us kids behind the goal on Bunkers Hill/South Stand we only stood there to try and catch some of those oranges, never did. Some of his goalkeeping was quite comical too but on the whole he was sound. Yes his kicking was prodigious and he was a big man and he always reminded me of a crooner of the day Frankie Vaughan, he was a character of immense proportions but as for the quality of his goalkeeping in comparison, I think we have had better in the likes of Alan Fettis, Tony Norman, Geoff Wealands, and in some respects Boaz Myhill but none had McKechnie's charisma. RIP big man.

    Hi Pudsey!
Mrs McKechnie asked me to look for a photo because Ian never had one! Is it possible to get a good quality copy taken of your clipping so that the McKechnie family have a keepsake?

    They would be so pleased!
