I've just ordered broadband from KCOM on behalf of my mum, who lives in Hull. She's got the router and an activation date for next week. However ever since placing the order she's been getting nuisance calls about her internet connection (not yet activated, router not plugged in) and her computer (which she doesn't have). I can only assume somebody undesirable has access to KCOM's data.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I've written to KCOM but I don't expect too much from that.

Yes, both my parents and my mother in law have had the same issue, both outside the KCOM area. An Indian sounding man rings them up to say he is from Microsoft, there is a problem with their computer, sometimes mentions a virus, and tries to get them to log on to their computer, presumably in order to direct them to download some dodgy software.

Well known scam, Google will tell you more. My mum enjoys playing the feeble old lady with them.

They offer to fix your PC problems for about £20 which is charged to your card, so all seems above board.
Then a few weeks later they take huge chunks having retained your card details.
My uncle got taken for about £2000 on his credit card, which was eventually refunded after a long battle

i had the same happen to me,indian guy rang me and said your pc has a virus.i asked what can you do to sort it out,he said do this do that ect ect then he asked what was on the screen i said your wife getting ****ed by a dog,the phone went dead.i've never had them ring me again

Thanks for the responses, I've had the general Microsoft scams before but I thought it was more than just coincidental given it started the day after I'd ordered broadband!

I've been with Karoo almost since they started and sometimes get the same calls but mine are from 'Windows', thing is all our stuff is Apple and therefore don't have windows so I get great pleasure playing the idiot with them until they realise several minutes later. I figure that while I am having fun they are not bothering anyone else with the scam!

Similar here. One told me I was wrong because he could tell I was using Windows. Have fun giving the made up bank details and then pretending the connection has been lost.

I am outside the area and get the same calls. My aim is to keep them occupied as long as possible. I say things like" its really good of you to help me because i am very old".
When i get fed up of stringing them along i put the phone near my radio and turn the volume to maximum.

happens all the time lots of scammers try it on in Australia i answer the phone with hello police can i help you works every time.

yeah the MS scam is old , they try to show they are from MS by pretending to prove they have access to you comuters inner heart ,

we just got lightstream and wired we get 233mbs download and can say for the first time im extreeeeeeemly happy with the speeds .
even wifi i get 198 , but never any nuisance calls relating to marketing .

Who the **** still has a landline phone to get these calls on?!
I mean I have one in theory, but I've no idea what the number is and it never gets used so I've no idea if people are ringing it

I don't get scam calls

My mother still has a landline.

I think yours qualifies as the most unconstructive post on this thread!

Apologies
I should have littered my post with emojis to make it clear I was being slightly tongue in cheek ;)
I do sympathise with elderly people being scammed, I think the scammers should be dished out some serious pain...chosen by the scamees
Having said that I'm surprised many people posting on here bother with a landline

I can't be much help...but that's normal I'm afraid
