JS must not be a fan of Smyth’s. Seems reluctant to start him unless he has to. Can’t understand it myself. The guy brings honesty and intensity with more likely to happen when he plays.
To be fair, Smyth’s issue has been end product. He seems to have improved in that area in recent games and he’s getting to be an easy name on the starting sheet for it. Long may it continue, he’s a fans player as you can see he is a grafter and gritty. Bang in a few more goals and everyone will be happy. Good team man too. Would be a crazy room with just Smyth, Kone, Mbengue and Jimmy in there!

Smyth also has a temper. Which is why he is sometimes pulled early.

I also don't think he can effectively play 3 games in a week as he gives everything, every minute ( I am sure he would disagree, but that is what we pay a manager for.

It was easier when Saito was playing well ( who is better defensively than Smyth). Start with Saito finish with Smyth, but now Saito is off the boil...it is reversed.

But yesterday they were playing to a plan, as Watford were bereft of FB.

Vale and Smyth were to cross to their far post, where the other would be waiting. It worked well..

Causing Kolli goal and the melee that nearly gave us a second.
Excellent from JS to do that

When I referred to 'pleasing change of tactics' it was noticeable how often our defenders would play a long ball and bypass the midfield. Tippy tappy possession for the sake of it because 'we want to play a passing game' is pointless if the players aren't up to it and the opposition always has 10 men behind the ball . A lot more fruitful when you have two willing runners up top to assist Kone. Perhaps the penny is dropping. That we are better when we have less of the ball. You are spot on about Smyth popping up at the far post. We know he can head the ball and so far opposition teams haven't worked that out.

Does anyone know why Obikwu did not even make the bench again? According to the pre-match team news on a Thursday each week he is always said to be ready to play some part in the forthcoming fixture.

Great performance following on from the Pompey game. Smyth MOM for me but some strong performances all round. Only concern is how we dropped off near the end. We need to convert such superiority in goals. Looking forward to what a stress-free last six games can produce...

For the second year in a row I saw it that Watford played better once 2-0 down.
I'm not sure we dropped off, more they decided to start playing football instead of pi55ing about falling over. Yesterday this also coincided with their number 66 & 3 coming off.

Our managers always seem to underestimate him, it's not just JS.

For me, when Smyth is on the pitch, things happen. His direct involvement and off the ball movement make things happen.

In that respect, I think he's one of our most valuable players. It's not a coincidence that a number of players are getting on the score sheet now that he's regularly playing.

Some say he's defensively weak. Firstly, I don't remember him being the clear cause of any goal conceded. But he's also put in some good tackles and win headers in important areas, surprisingly.
Just seen that we had the youngest starting eleven in the championship for this game. 23.8 years of age.
Youngest starting 11 this week? Or this season?

I think a lot of it comes from upstairs. They sit down in the summer and talk about playing through the thirds, developing youth and playing lovely football that will get their best cows fat enough to sell at the market with a nice PowerPoint setting out the strategy.

Then we get punched in the face in August and it turns out having a bloke who will run all day and help the full-back but won’t be worth £10m isn’t such a bad thing.

I think Smyths prime negative in the past has been lack of final product, which we all know has been wasteful when he has done all the good work up to that point. He seems to have improved that (partly by just doing an Ilias Chair and going for a goal a bit more often and occasionally succeeding thankfully). He’s certainly become a much more valuable player on the pitch for us over recent games. Long May it continue.
