The Avalon in question is a real place, not the one of Arthurian legend. The two men in the answer are both real too.
Problem is there are so many places called Avalon. Whilst googling I found the Avalon Peninsula - a sizeable part of Newfoundland, which looks a glorious place to visit some day. Other than that I'm not getting anywhere on this one.
I wondered if it was something to do with the company Avalon Productions who have produced some programmes for BBC, but looking at the clues that's unlikely. I'm not even sure if they're still going as I haven't seen them on the end credits of a programme for a while.
I have just put Stevia in some stewed pears and I do know it was banned in South Africa for a long time despite its popularity in the US.
