Problem is there are so many places called Avalon. Whilst googling I found the Avalon Peninsula - a sizeable part of Newfoundland, which looks a glorious place to visit some day. Other than that I'm not getting anywhere on this one.

I wondered if it was something to do with the company Avalon Productions who have produced some programmes for BBC, but looking at the clues that's unlikely. I'm not even sure if they're still going as I haven't seen them on the end credits of a programme for a while.

Blues guitarist and singer, Mississippi John Hurt, was born in Avalon (and worth a listen for his finger-picking guitar work).

I am late but my answer is from earlier answers but not together John Hurt was born in Chesterfield and Greg Harrison in Avalon. Both are actors.

Brazzein or Miraculin both come from plants in Africa. The latter one was banned for a time I think.
