Caps were only issued for the Championship, and each player was issued one for the Championship that year, whether they were a sub in one match or played every minute of all 3 games.
Yes you are right. Caps were only given out for internationals between the home nations. You could play in matches against other countries but not be awarded a cap. Scotland were the only home nation to do this.
