Why would anyone want to rub a wombat's bum?

    No - I can't imagine what counselling you'd get from a wombat...

Never have wombat's bottoms been so searched for in google before ! I have heard that they have a kind of reinforced bum - made just of modified skin cells filled with cartilages. Some producers could be interested if looking for natural alternatives to non biodegradable plastics - but why rubbing I don't know. Possibly to warm up your hand on a cold day - like sticking your arm up a horse's arse.

Good try but no. The 'breed' of wombat I'm referring to is the northern hairy-nosed wombat and specifically the female of the species...

My memories of wandering around Ku-ring-ai looking for wombats are that finding the b*ggers is tricky and reaching into the undergrowth to stroke anything would require very long arms. I don't suppose they excrete alcohol <laugh>

This could be controversial - the Kuringai are an Aboriginal tribe whose traditional lands are what is now called the Sydney Basin. Reaching into the undergrowth could well find you stroking one of the tribe...

But, no, as far as I'm aware wombats don't excrete alcohol. :) As another clue, northern hairy-nosed wombat is on the critically endangered species list.

The point about Pavlov's dogs was that they learned to salivate at a sound before food appeared. What you can condition a hairy nosed wombat to do I'm not sure...bat longer than an Australian middle order batsman?<laugh>

So, to summarize - a rub of a female wombat's bottom will produce a conditioned response which will aid the survival of a critically endangered species. If you can work out how science helps with that survival, you're in...

Maybe it turns them on thus bringing their 'mating season' on a bit - which in turn speeds up reproduction ?

No - but it certainly does have something to do with reproduction, and how science helps that.

The last two words of my previous post were a phonetic clue...

Rubbing a wombat's bum will be the urination of you, BB. It makes them more attractive to zoologists and other marsupials.

I'll give you that NZ. It's all part of an Artificial Insemination program aimed at preserving the species. The female wombats are conditioned to pee when their bums are rubbed, the pee is then tested to see if they are on heat. If they are, they are then artificially inseminated.

    Over to you...

As the Arctic ice cap melts polar bears have increasingly bred with North American brown bears. What is the name given to the offspring of these two species?

Is it a combination of the Inuit words for polar bear (Nanuk) and grizzly bear (Aklak) - Nanulak?
