Don't argue with a referee when it comes to the laws of the game.

Fair enough, I never knew the rule applied to free kicks as well as goal kicks.

"For both direct and indirect freekicks, the ball must be stationary when the kick is taken and the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player."

Yes, I get that. What I'm wondering is why the "not leaving the penalty area" rule superceded the "same player can't kick it twice" rule.

Yep. That we're going to play a game on the final day of November where the narrative is "an important game for Manchester City as they try to catch/close the gap on Southampton" takes some getting used to. That the narrative thereafter could be "Southampton extended their lead over Manchester City to 7 (heh, or 9, or 10, depending on their tussle with Swans)" is something that I'll need three weeks to wrap my head around.
