When you read the whole article, he is quite positive about signing Welbeck. I think the message at the beginning has got a bit garbled. He seems to say he would have preferred a loan, but then later it says he preferred a permanent deal when that came available. Is it possible that he means this:

I wanted to sign Welbeck on loan, but was busy in the morning and couldn't get things sorted.
Later, Utd made him available to sign permanently, so I was lucky I had been busy as that was a better deal.

I think it is closer to that than the headline is trying to make out.

Me thinks that because Wenger often speaks like Yoda with the words in the wrong order in a sentence (or in the right place for a direct translation) that the papers have taken exactly what you say and made their story quite literally from the slight language barrier. There is no way he meant that if that is what he said.

I heard the first part of the interview. It was typical of the media they chose to select some of his words from different ends of the conversation and put them together.

On another note, I noticed on Instagram that Lovren had posted a picture of his shirt in the dressing room beside Gerrard's. Jose Fonte then commented something along the lines of "I think you're trying too hard buddy".

Brilliant!

For a professional footballer to hero worship a team mate is cringeworthy. We all know you are at Liverpool, Lovren, but we no longer care because we have Fonte (who appears to be the best half of last year's partnership) and Toby Wotsit.
