What has he done as health secretary? This highlights one of Labour’s biggest issues - communications

Reduced waiting lists by 110,000 in March
A&E waiting times are improving and 4 hour waits are the lowest they’ve been for 5 years.
Recruited 2,000 new Gps
Recruited 8,000 new mental health professionals
Ambulance response times are the fastest since pre-Covid

You’re right, the messaging is poor, none of this stuff gets reported; but look at the state of our media.

This really is incredible. Let's not forget Burnham can only stand if the Labour NEC allows him to and last time we were told the NEC is full of Starmer's allies, which is why they wouldn't let him stand.

Then he has to win one of the most contrived by elections in history where every other party will no doubt say the vote is totally unnecessary and campaign on Labour taking the constituency for granted. Then Labour would face a new election for Manchester Mayor, which they're far from guaranteed to win.

If Streeting doesn't have the nerve to move now then he doesn't have the nerve to be Prime Minister.
Streeting is stuck because he does have the numbers but they won't put their name down until they know if Burnham is in the running. No one is gonna bet against Burnham and they can't switch their nomination. If Burnham is in the running Streetings small chance of victory completely disappears.

Although Burnham is losing some support because he's coniving as much as the others are. lol.

If this by election date falls after wherever the closing date for nominations ends (if the contest is triggered today) then Streeting and his supporters would move today. They aren't taking that chance and then the by election date is announced letting Burnham get in on at the last possible chance.

Saying that Burnham is gonna struggle to win that by election. Looks a pretty bad choice of constituency IMO. Unless he is gambling all in on beating Reform in a constituency they are predicted to win by 20% next GE and thus sending a message of "I am the only one who can beat reform." Big big gamble. If he loses, he's lost everything personally and Labour are completely destroyed.

The only question I have ref the reduced waiting lists , is how much have they been reduced because people are paying to go private ?

Not actually expecting you to know the answer , but I know two people who have done so .

The British electorate has voted in large numbers to boot out Labour, reasoning that “things can’t get any worse”, despite copious evidence from around the world that they absolutely can.

I imagine that's definitely a factor. Two years ago we were told my five year old needed an operation. Nothing deadly serious but he was going to the toilet every 20 to 30 minutes, which was upsetting him and interfering with school, days out etc etc. We were told it would be 2 or 3 months before he'd see a consultant and then another 8 months or so before he could have the operation. So pretty much a full year of going to the toilet every half hour. My wife's dad took some money out of his pension to pay for us to go private. We saw a specialist the following week and he'd had the operation and fully recovered before we would even have had the first consultation on the NHS. Worth every penny.

I've also seen claims from GPs of crackdowns on referrals (i.e. GPs being told not to refer people for certain scans or being told to apply tougher standards when considering whether to refer people for certain treatments) and other things about people being removed from waiting lists to massage the figures. I can't remember the details of the latter offhand though.

Does he have to resign as Mayor before he stands or only if he wins?

Not at all incredible, it's as predicted and the NEC wouldn't risk the internal strife blocking his candidature would cause.
