The issue is that most people don't feel the need to shout their rhetoric online to the masses and so the communal voice tends to get lost in the noise of the vocal minority.
You could counter that by saying that what you hear online might just be the oud voices and a lot of "shy" people just not saying it out loud like that!

You're celebrating paying £60m+ for elections that will then be repeated less than a year later? So when you complain councils don't maintain your roads you will know where the money went.

Oh and general elections happen a six weeks' notice so three months should be enough.
Do you remember the beloved EU elections in 2019? When we were leaving months after? We had to have them because it was the law!

IMO Labour were correct that this is a waste of money with the upcoming local gov reforms.

But they don't half look utterly shambolic in the way this is unfolding, it looks like they didn't do the due diligence necessary.

Again the issue for me here is more incompetence, political naivety and poor quality communications. The latter two have especially been a theme of their government so far unfortunately.
Ignoring that, yes it is a waste of money...Labour's problem is that they get legal advice on everything at the beginning. The best legal advice I would wager in the country and then they choose to ignore it thinking that everyone will moan about it but not challenge them legally. They got found out big time here.

And this is the same Kier Starmer that (rightly) didn't want the EU elections to go ahead in 2019 but conceded that it was law in the UK and EU that they were held yet also stated that he was in conversation with officials and lawyers in the EU and of nation states to talk about avoiding them and yet despite the Tory majority and Labour being against holding those (pointless) elections they were held! Because it was the law!

It would help if our top lawyer previously in charge of the whole prosecution of crime in the country actually listened to his lawyers (not just Hermer) and didn't take illegal decisions! Chagos is another that is seemingly having legal issues with its enactment now.

It just looks a ****show when you have top legal people in top jobs in government who try to do things that their own legal teams are warning them are illegal! I seem to remember all these saintly white people criticising any move the Tories made in terms of legalities.

Its very strange that when Boris tried to illegally prorogue parliament that the Supreme court stepped in to overrule previous judgements by lower courts but they have not stepped in with illegalities during this Labour government. It takes a legal challenge, paid for by god knows whos money, by Farage to get our lawmakers to back down and admit they were trying to do something illegal! IT is the worst look in the world from someone (Starmer) who repeated so oftento anyone that would listen "you cannot be a lawmaker and a lawbreaker!"

Its just another example of how bad the optics have been for Starmer and the Labour party that they spent 14 years in opposition calling out anything they could as being scandal or resignable, saying they would put an end to all this and be whiter than white yet since they have been in they've crammed 14 years worth of scandal into 18 months!

I can't understand why they didn't seem to anticipate another Party might challenge this and they clearly didnt bother to check that it was legally watertight, those should be bare minimum expectations.
Because look through history. Political parties do not like to put their money where their mouth is because its darned expensive. They "make a stad" for free by bemoaning government practices while not legally challenging it. Its normally people outside that challenge these things (Gina Miller etc.)

Politicians are full of wind and not a lot else including principles. They just say things to make themselves appear to be making a stand but will knowingly do this while letting these things happen!

Starmer's team admitting this was illegal now calls into question them using the same reasoning last year! And the cancellations did go through last year because no-one actually challenged them. They just moaned about it and let it happen.

I totally agree with your post. The elections will achieve nothing and are clearly a waste of time and money. It is a pyrrhic victory for Reform if they take these councils as 6 months is sufficient to show they are inept. Chances are they will not retain the councils again.

As has been pointed out , the Reform MPs who defected should be made to stand for election. Starmer should be reminding Farage of this. It is also disappointing that no one has challenged Farage in Clacton forfailing to represent his constituents.

Just think that there is plenty to show Farage is a hypocrite but no one seems to be doing so.
Ian. Starmer cannot say this! Several people have defected to Labour in Starmer's opposition period without any by elections happening! Dan Poulter, Christian Wakefield, Natalie Elphicke!

Rachel Reeves is even on record arguing against a by election in the Christian Wakefield case brushing it off with a simple "just not the way our democracy works"

You seem to often come out with statements like this completely oblivious to the fact that Labour under Starmer (just like most parties) has accepted defections without any suggestion of by election! Do you even know your own party's history?

You say that Starmer should be "reminding Farage of this" which would instantly be an egg on the face moment and yet another open goal for ridicule from Starmer! Maybe its more surprising that he hasn't said this and put his foot in it again but he cannot stand up and grandstand on an issue that he has form himself on! So reminding Farage of what? For not doing what Starmer's incoming defectors have not done? reminding Farage of something that he himself then shows he has forgotten his side have not done?

You are blind to anything Labour!

That's a bit like people not seeing all this new media stuff saying "Charlie Who? Kirk? never heard of him" when he was a major factor in getting the "Trump message" out there! Just because you don't know of these people doesn;t mean it is niche or not representative. There are some people on the internet I have never even heard the name of yet have followings and subscribers higher than famous pop stars etc! When you have you "I'm a celeb" you will say who? never heard of this person yet they actually are more famous than the famous people you know, Its just that you don;t know they are famous!

My kids don't know most of the famous people I do. Its just sidemen, KSI stuff like that! Bring out an energy drink? BOOM Prime was literally selling for £9-£12 a bottle in the shops and a black trade in it. It is mental stuff! These "who?" people can have a huge reach and a huge impact without you ever hearing their name.
Unfortunately I have heard of Rupert Lowe and know exactly how disgusting he is!

All social media is riddled with bots. engagement farming does work like that. The paid element doesn't X like other platforms constantly trying to improve their anti bot and anti spam capabilities but like all social platforms failing because they are always one step behind especially in the era of AI!

Reddit is as bad. Amazing how many counter views suddenly appear that detail out of date "fact" which is unproven etc. The last few days has seen a surge of pro-starmer posts defending him which are obvs bot ones complete with defensive facts or claims of success that are not true!

The bot thing on all sides on social media is crazy. We just have Ian to worry about..

Just extra on the Lowe Party reaching out to UKIP.

Tenconi's response to it is really something special.

You know, the leader of the party who recently rebranded with the iron cross as its logo.

Highlights include;

"There is an equally aggressive anti-establishment campaign amongst the socialists and the communists. These terrorists are all well financed, motivated, registered to vote and will vote as a unit"

"They now have the Greens to front their subversive intent"

"The Communists must be deported, along with subversives as well as Islamists, illegals and foreigners who are net receivers"

"Any political party on the right campaigning for this and mass deportations is a friend of ours"

"I am delighted that Rupert Lowe has decided to launch this initiative"

"UKIP stands for justice for our girls, justice for Britain and to reinstate Christianity back into the heart of government. We are the Party calling for mass deportations and to take the country back" (Bit of an oxymoron, no?)

"May I take this opportunity once again to congratulate and applaud Rupert for using his position in Parliament to become our collective voice"

Tell you what I didn't have Rupert Lowe becoming the new Oswald Mosley backed by the richest man on the planet on my bingo card back in 2005.

Wonder how many of us in this thread qualify for deportation as a communist subversive in ol Rupe's Britain? Especially those of us with foreign born wives working in the public sector (and in some cases i'm sure with mixed race children).

Can we use the fascismo word yet?

O bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao-ciao-ciao <whistle>

Labour are already targetting dual nationals as reported on the BBC today.

My wife is worried enough about Farage as it is. Again , i feel the electorate will turn against Lowe. Not sure that Lowe wil be taken seriously by voters. The position Lowe is taking will not be tolerated by mainstream voters. He has been emboldened by Trump and Musk.

Reform definitely bother us a bit, but I think that would be a bit of a 'wait and see' situation, or a move to Scotland or Wales where there is at least some degree of self governance.

Restore would be a 'next flight to Canada or Australia' job me thinks.

Just to add a bit of balance to the post I made about Rupe's inquiry. This is from the site that most on here love to hate but in this case will no doubt love. The good news is we ( Saints ) get a mention but the bad news is it's the unwelcome connection between us and our ex chairman.

The fight wasn't between Farage and Lowe! It was between Lowe and Zia Yusuf and Farage backed Yusuf. Pretty much to do with Lowe's ideas on deportation etc.

Following on from my post on Friday which apparently some had trouble understanding, or attack being the best form of defence tried to switch the thread into being about me. It isn't the first time that tactic has been seen on here especially when those people have no credible defence to rely on. I couldn't care less about whether people don't like having alternative opinions on here or even if they don't like me. But trying to deflect away from the issue at hand by making spurious accusations only confirms that tactic is widespread, not only on here but in the case I'm posting about.

So, for those who can't or don't want to understand what my post was about, or for those who can only attack the source of information rather than argue the issue itself, this is another opportunity to educate yourselves. Not from the Mail on Sunday but the beloved Guardian.

The national inquiry into grooming gangs “must be fearless in confronting uncomfortable truths” after too many girls “were failed by the very institutions charged with their protection”, the victims’ commissioner for England and Wales has said.

The government confirmed on Monday that it would set up a statutory inquiry and accept all 12 recommendations of Lady Casey’s rapid review of the issue. The home secretary, Yvette Cooper, told the Commons: “We cannot and must not shy away from these findings.”

The victims’ commissioner, Helen Newlove, said: “This inquiry must be fearless in confronting uncomfortable truths.
“Too many girls were failed by the very institutions charged with their protection. This is our chance to lift the stone, expose those failures, and ensure they are never repeated.
“Victims must remain at the heart of this work. Sharing experiences of child sexual abuse is deeply personal and often retraumatising. Thousands came forward to the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse – often for the first time – yet years on, too little has changed. We must not repeat those mistakes.”

The children’s commissioner for England, Rachel de Souza, said the girls at the heart of this scandal “have been failed by every professional in their lives”.
She added: “They, and the institutions that were intended to protect them, ignored their voices and sidelined their experiences. They must be held accountable for turning a blind eye to a sustained campaign of violence against young girls by predatory men.
“This is a source of national shame
– I’ve been clear nothing can be off the table in pursuing justice for the victims.”

Although Yvette Cooper has announced a public enquiry would take place, previously the government said there was no need. Because of that Rupert Lowe set up his own and then said he would continue with it because the government were dragging their heels. Whatever you feel about Lowe, I cannot see why people call him a c__t or racist in this particular situation. It does seem to me that in their hatred for Lowe, they have decided his inquiry must be based on racism rather than the justice of bringing corrupt, repellent officials to prosecution.

IMO race/religion has played a part in this scandal, but mostly with the offenders and those who chose to cover it up.

Peter Mandelson’s influence on Keir Starmer’s Labour was so pervasive that he was involved in the secret spreadsheet for selecting Labour candidates in the 2024 general election. But he wasn’t the only corporate lobbyist who helped choose Labour MPs.

Full story in the new Private Eye, out now.
You must log in or register to see images

Also quick one.

The new Head of the Civil Service is a walking scandal waiting to happen and they have still appointed her.

This will absolutely blow up in Starmer's face in a very short time - genuinely diabolical political instincts.
