Do you remember the beloved EU elections in 2019? When we were leaving months after? We had to have them because it was the law!
Ignoring that, yes it is a waste of money...Labour's problem is that they get legal advice on everything at the beginning. The best legal advice I would wager in the country and then they choose to ignore it thinking that everyone will moan about it but not challenge them legally. They got found out big time here.
And this is the same Kier Starmer that (rightly) didn't want the EU elections to go ahead in 2019 but conceded that it was law in the UK and EU that they were held yet also stated that he was in conversation with officials and lawyers in the EU and of nation states to talk about avoiding them and yet despite the Tory majority and Labour being against holding those (pointless) elections they were held! Because it was the law!
It would help if our top lawyer previously in charge of the whole prosecution of crime in the country actually listened to his lawyers (not just Hermer) and didn't take illegal decisions! Chagos is another that is seemingly having legal issues with its enactment now.
It just looks a ****show when you have top legal people in top jobs in government who try to do things that their own legal teams are warning them are illegal! I seem to remember all these saintly white people criticising any move the Tories made in terms of legalities.
Its very strange that when Boris tried to illegally prorogue parliament that the Supreme court stepped in to overrule previous judgements by lower courts but they have not stepped in with illegalities during this Labour government. It takes a legal challenge, paid for by god knows whos money, by Farage to get our lawmakers to back down and admit they were trying to do something illegal! IT is the worst look in the world from someone (Starmer) who repeated so oftento anyone that would listen "you cannot be a lawmaker and a lawbreaker!"
Its just another example of how bad the optics have been for Starmer and the Labour party that they spent 14 years in opposition calling out anything they could as being scandal or resignable, saying they would put an end to all this and be whiter than white yet since they have been in they've crammed 14 years worth of scandal into 18 months!
Because look through history. Political parties do not like to put their money where their mouth is because its darned expensive. They "make a stad" for free by bemoaning government practices while not legally challenging it. Its normally people outside that challenge these things (Gina Miller etc.)
Politicians are full of wind and not a lot else including principles. They just say things to make themselves appear to be making a stand but will knowingly do this while letting these things happen!
Starmer's team admitting this was illegal now calls into question them using the same reasoning last year! And the cancellations did go through last year because no-one actually challenged them. They just moaned about it and let it happen.
Ian. Starmer cannot say this! Several people have defected to Labour in Starmer's opposition period without any by elections happening! Dan Poulter, Christian Wakefield, Natalie Elphicke!
Rachel Reeves is even on record arguing against a by election in the Christian Wakefield case brushing it off with a simple "just not the way our democracy works"
You seem to often come out with statements like this completely oblivious to the fact that Labour under Starmer (just like most parties) has accepted defections without any suggestion of by election! Do you even know your own party's history?
You say that Starmer should be "reminding Farage of this" which would instantly be an egg on the face moment and yet another open goal for ridicule from Starmer! Maybe its more surprising that he hasn't said this and put his foot in it again but he cannot stand up and grandstand on an issue that he has form himself on! So reminding Farage of what? For not doing what Starmer's incoming defectors have not done? reminding Farage of something that he himself then shows he has forgotten his side have not done?

My wife is worried enough about Farage as it is. Again , i feel the electorate will turn against Lowe. Not sure that Lowe wil be taken seriously by voters. The position Lowe is taking will not be tolerated by mainstream voters. He has been emboldened by Trump and Musk.
Reform definitely bother us a bit, but I think that would be a bit of a 'wait and see' situation, or a move to Scotland or Wales where there is at least some degree of self governance.
Restore would be a 'next flight to Canada or Australia' job me thinks.

The fight wasn't between Farage and Lowe! It was between Lowe and Zia Yusuf and Farage backed Yusuf. Pretty much to do with Lowe's ideas on deportation etc.
