For the benefit of all, a good way of looking at the financial situation in this country is this:
For 2 decades there was a farm. had a really big farm and we always spent a lot on the farm to keep it going. The animals were happy and we sold the produce of the farm for a decent rate.
Then an international farming disaster occurred and we stopped making enough to get by. A new owner took over the farm and decided to sort out the issues by keeping the old tractor. We didn't need a new one every year. That was wasteful. We also froze the wages for the farmhands. And we sold some of the cows. And we sold the fourth field. Three was enough to leave one fallow.
Then the next year we hadn't increased our profits so we froze the wages again. And we kept the tractor - but let's not bother with maintenance. It is nearly new. And we sold a few more cows.
Then the next year, for some reason, our fields weren't making significantly larger sums, so we froze the wages of the farmhands - who seemed lazier than before - and the tractor had some rust but was fine, and we sold a few more cows.
Then the next year, we were asked if we wanted to renew our farming association membership. No! We don't need your regulation anymore, we said! And we lost our free animal healthcare. So we froze wages, sold some cows, and sold another acre of the third field.
This went on for a few more years. Then there was a big sickness and all our staff couldn't work - but we had to keep paying them. And there were some badgers coming on to our land - and we wanted to export them all to Rwanda - so we froze the wages again to find the money. Then the tractor broke down.
But we told the new buyers the tractor worked and sold the lot the Labour party.
And the Labour party had to choose. Sell more cows - we only have 8 left -, sell the broken tractor, sell the last field, or re-mortgage the lot and try to begin rebuilding. Re-mortgaging is really risky and it might not work, but the other option is to keep running the whole lot down until there is nothing left.
Because that is real life. So suck it up and let's hope it works.
