But there are significant political events happening all the time Tom, and a lot of them deserve discussion. I would like to talk about, to name a few examples, the decision to demolish Grenfell Tower, the situation in Gaza, the Ukraine war, Labour’s effort to turn the economy around, and climate change, probably more important than anything else.

But any attempt to engage in debate on anything is always derailed by Osvaldorama’s continuous spouting of utter bullshit and lies he has copied off Twitter, and his complete contempt for anyone with a different view.

As people pointed out yesterday, this thread had become a sensible place again for the 4 weeks he was banned. People could hold opposing views and debate the merits without resorting to blanket insults.

I think it's worth continuing with if only for the links to Jonathan Pie, other video clips, PE and HIGNFY.
Not quite the woke lefty journalism some would have us believe.
    Private Eye Magazine
Labour MP Dan Norris, raking in nearly £96,000 a year as part-time mayor, has splashed thousands in taxpayers' cash trying to bury allegations of bullying and harassment at the troubled West of England Combined Authority (Weca).
Documents seen by Private Eye expose deep tensions between senior officials at Weca and Norris, along with his ex-political adviser Alex Mayer.
Full story in the latest Eye. PLUS news from the Rotten Boroughs of Lambeth, Sutton, Southwark, Somerset, and North Northants.

I do agree there are plenty of events worth discussing. But I feel this thread has been somewhat tainted by people who refuse to even entertain other people's opinions - and Os is not the only guilty party there, albeit he is the most controversial. I just wish people could debate things without having their left wing or right wing blinkers on. Climate change isn't going away regardless!

This thread was created mainly as an outlet for people who wanted to talk about the issues in the lead up to the Brexit referendum, but more importantly, it gave the mods a lever to enforce the “no politics” rule on all the other threads. I think, despite the problems with certain posters, it’s still worth keeping a single thread where politics can be debated. Anyone who doesn’t want to read or post on this thread can simply stay away.

I do agree about the blinkers thing though. As James O’Brien often says, what’s the point in having a mind if you’re not prepared to change it? Too many of us hold on to particular viewpoints in the same way we support our chosen football team, often beyond any rational reasoning.

Absolutely, that's my thread and I refuse to be calm, rational or objective.

    **** Sports Republic.

Everything else on this particular thread is all a bit much to be honest. I didn't realise how American we've all become with our politics and how entrenched those views are. 99% of the time I couldn't really give 2 ****s about politics. I'm working class so none of them represent me and my life is too busy* to pay it much notice to be honest.

*not too busy to rant about Sports Republic though. **** those guys :emoticon-0173-middl

Never really bother reading on here and just scrolled the last few pages. Hilarious and quite sad to see grown men be quite so petty. Politics is best done down the pub over a pint

Looking at the way Trump is locking horns with the CIA and the FBI, I am reminded of the time when John F Kennedy said he would “smash the CIA into a thousand pieces”. What could possibly go wrong after making such a threat?
He obviously didn’t smash the CIA, but he did “retire” the CIA Director Allen Dulles, a man who later served in the Warren Commission that investigated the JFK assassination.
For those interested in JFK conspiracy theories, I would highly recommend watching JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, a documentary directed by Oliver Stone, which reveals a lot of eye opening details, including future president Gerald Ford suggesting that the entry point of the so called “magic bullet” be changed to fit in with the story of one bullet causing so much damage to both JFK and the Texas Governor John Connally Jr.
I rewatched it recently in anticipation of more locked away documents being released in the near future.

Grenfell. I don’t really understand this idea of keeping the thing up. People need homes to live in, not monuments. Someone explain this one to me.

Gaza is craziness. Why is it that people can see that some people have rights but not recognise the rights of others? Imagine a race that was kicked out of one country being then kicked out of another. Is it irony that the state if Israel, built by a people who were kicked out of many nations, keeps kicking the Palestinian people out of one home after another?

Ukraine. I hope this war ends soon. Too much killing and no progress anywhere. I have a tiny bit of hope Trump was being honest when he said he could end it - but it has to be a peace satisfactory to the people of Ukraine.

Labour are up against it on the economy. I am happy for them to be unpopular if they make long term progress.

Climate change. The key is to go 100% green energy. It will be cheaper for all of us and is achievable in the short term!

It was a really good thread for a long time
So informative during COVID and Brexit
People were posting academic articles that gave insight and contained informed opinions and facts (you remember those)
We had one poster who had different views to the general gist on here, but they were informed views that came with some credibility
    I miss those days

    Tom and Chilcs

I just wanted to add my thoughts to this thread which I would loath to be pulled as well as to add my thanks for both acting as Mods.

I do not share the opinions of everyone in here but there are regular posters like Laces. NO.7 ,Tejon , Jabbo etc who I tend to pay attention to as I feel they have a lot to contribute. I find that I cannot take Os seriously and have wondered whether he / she /they (!) actually believes what they are typing and whether they are still a teenager. The posts do not appear to be written by an adult.

I was put in mind of Os's post by this weeks media show on Radio 4 which looked at how Gen Z received and viewed the news , particularly with regard to how they perceived matters of truth and bias. I think we are in age where truth no longer matters and the issue is whether or not an items fits someone's agenda. This is clearly what is happening with Os's posts which are typically ill thought out or have not been analysed.

I was surprised by Vin's actions as I always understood him to be forceful but never to the point of being vulgar. Please do not ban him .

I agree that the debates have now become a matter of ridiculing Os as opposed to proper debate amongst everyone who is chatting on this thread. In my opinion he is not worth engaging as the replies never address the weaknesses pointed out to him. It is worrying that so people think like him these days but this is not unique. I would envisage that he / she / will think differently once Trump’s presidency has concluded.

I think we need a political topic which would unite us all. I'm going to put forward an idea which will get Vin and Os holding hands and singing kum-ba-yah.

Freeman on the land/Sovereign citizens. I defy anyone to argue that they're not the biggest bunch of dicks out there!

On the topic of people’s rights, I understand that America has stated its intention not to attend the 2025 G20 summit in Johannesburg because it believes that the rights of a body of people are being violated and undermined.
The people, whose rights they feel are being abused, are white South Africans.

The Grenfell issue rsolves around the fact that the building is still a crime scene. It will need to remain so until we have some criminal convictions. I can understand why the victims want it to remain but it is a dangerous structure and will need to be demolished at some point.
