Not exactly true. Mrs Ghey didn't arrive in the gallery until after Sunak made his comment, so it wasn't said in front of her like some people would have you believe. A crass remark I agree but the level of disgust is being exaggerated for political purposes. The same about his so called "bet" with Piers Morgan. Opposition parties and their supporters are competing to show who is the most outraged. None of it is real. IMO very few politicians would normally have much genuine sympathy for refugees or Brianna Ghey, but when some political mileage can be made they suddenly become compassionate and virtuous. And outraged, very outraged. To make myself clear, I believe this cynical approach applies to all politicians, and in this respect they are all the same. It's just in this case Sunak is the target because there is a general election around the corner and every opportunity has to be taken. But it has to be proportionate. To me, descriptions such as "disgusting", "outrageous", "all time low" for relatively small issues makes people immune to the effect when something truly disgusting is taking place. Something like the decline in the NHS, the amount of homeless people or chums earning fortunes from ppe contracts.
I do agree with this. It was a crass comment and ill-timed but being wildly blown out of proportion. I can’t stand Sunak, so this isn’t out of some desire to defend him. I agree all are looking to score points by employing extreme hyperbole in terms of reactions and criticisms etc
Bad hardly does justice to the inept incompetance, the graft and corruption, today it's emerging Michelle Mone assured the government that she was not entitled to “any financial benefit whatsoever” from a PPE company, five months before £29m of its profits were transferred into a trust for her benefit. The list goes on and will continue to grow.
By the way, I thought Starmer’s reaction to the inappropriate remark was pretty sincere and genuine. In an environment where everything is artificial, it stuck out.
Jeeze, I'm agreeing with both Os and IOAG on some things here...the moon is going to crash into the sea! But that's actually the point. Just because it's Os, or just because it's IOAG doens't matter. We're so easily led into this path of "it's right or left" instead of treating each point on it's merit. The thing of 'learned offense' really bugs me. People are offended because they've been taught that they should be offended by something, because it's 'right' to be offended by a perceived slur, rather than actually taking offence. Sod that.
She was in the house if not in the gallery and Sunak's jibe goes beyond crass and deserves calling out as such.
Has anyone asked her whether she was offended by Sunak's remark, or are we taking offence on behalf of her? I don't know the answer to that question, btw.
From the way she carries herself I think she would be above that and would wary of attacks from the rabid right wing.
She was in the HoC but not watching PMQ from the gallery as you said. Many media sites have said the same so I'm not pointing the finger at you, it's more that some media and politicians are making it sound worse than it was. That was the point of my comment. If you think it was worse than that I think you're letting your political dislike of Sunak cloud your judgement.
Although as there is a live feed from the Chamber to all parts of the HoC it's a reasonable assumption she would have seen Sunak's **** up live on TV.
I say again Sunak's jibe goes beyond crass and deserves calling out as such. Those that trivialise his words do so because of their blind loyalty to the crumbling tory hierarchy. It weas a **** thing to say. He has of history of clumsy crassness no doubt it will continue
I am by no means a blind Tory loyalist and I don’t think it’s that bad at all. It’s just a boring thing to focus on when there’s so much wrong in the country
A look at tomorrow's headlines and TV news will reassure you that it's not the only issue being reported on.
It happened today, it was another low point in Sunak's increased acceleration towards the dustbin of history. Of course people are going to talk about until his next monumental **** up
You can see it as a failing in a number of ways really. Sunak pulls this cheap 'He doesn't even know what a woman is!' schtick in almost every PMQs, always in response to a completely unrelated question and as such he was long due some form of humiliation for this crass, pathetic behaviour. However I would rather it didn't blow up too much, because as much as Sunak deserves everything he gets for his poor, cynical and demonizing efforts, I don't feel it would be fair on that family to get caught in a media storm, although they may well have their own opinion on that. Ultmately making a crack about trans people in front of a woman whos trans child was butchered in part by a person who held transphobic views is, it turns out, somewhat of a faux pas. Ignoring the fact that it showcases what a nasty pillock he is (because no matter your view on the matter it is a complicated, emotive issue and turning it into a bit of a sporting joke to have a merry old cackle at the much more serious politician opposite when he asks you about why noone can access a ****ing dentist isn't really good form), it just goes to show how inept he is as a politician that he can't put two and two together and think maybe, just maybe that might not be a good idea. While some may argue it is being blown out of proportion (I don't necessarily think it is, he deserves all the **** he gets for this in my mind), the broader point is that it is symptomatic of so many failings of the man and his party. They are out of touch. He and they are bad at their job. They aren't interested in fixing the country and deflect serious questions with unrelated culture war nonsense, it was going to bite them in the arse sooner or later and they fully deserve it blowing up in their face. They are happy to create and deepen division for a distraction. They are not interested in serving the country, only serving themselves and they can't go soon enough. Is this type of shyster really the best our country and its finest institutions can muster? /rant.
