I am not sure Corbyn is that unelectable to be honest.
I would NEVER vote for him - because I am a 40+ something with a small property portfolio and a decent job. I also (crucially) have gained experience of living through the 1970s and whilst the weather, the TV shows and music were all good, the state of our economy was definitely NOT. I was only a kid, but I remember the winter of discontent and the 4-day week. My dad worked at Rolls Royce and they were always on strike - but at work they sat around and played cards - it really was a case of the tail wagging the dog - and the tail very nearly broke the dog (in the case of British Leyland it DID).
Socialism IS a nice idea - and in utopia it would work, but it doesnt make allowances for the fact that we are HUMAN and we are ALL out for ourselves. The workers think that they break their backs to sweat for what they see as fatcat bosses, but turn all that around and they would sit around playing cards or going sick, but still collect their salaries which SOMEONE is expected to pay. Can't you remember being at school and what it felt like on the odd occasion the school closed unexpectedly, or the teacher left the room for any length of time? Take the piss? damned right we did! we ALL did - its human nature.
The trouble is, a lot of young people - plus people who's roots are not in this country will not have experienced that - and to be honest I can understand why - disaffected young people are leaving university at 22ish, some with a degree, but they owe £40k+ before they have even taken their first day at a job - if they can land anything better than delivering pizzas or working in a bar that is. And housing? thats a laugh - most havent a hope of getting their own house until at least 35. That is VERY painful and I am VERY glad I am not starting out in my 20s now (although I wouldn't mind some of my physical attributes from back then!).
Corbyn promises them an end to all that - no more student debt, a house, a decent job (yeah right!), with everyone loving each other (yeah right!) - funded by scrapping the expensive Trident and a few unnecessary soldiers and sailors and taxing a few rich people - after all, why would hard up young people, or immigrants care about that? Their only experience of war has been watching the (illegal IMO) Iraq war on TV and by playing Medal of Honor on their playstations. They are so far detatched from the reality of the Cold War - and they are told that the trouble in France was caused by our Iraq adventure, so we would be making a statement of peace by retreating from the world stage (yeah right!)
We 40+ somethings know that is all bullshit and would end in an utter disaster, but the likes of MTG still believe it - and I don't blame them - it offers them a quick fix - a drug hit to believe in - and they WILL vote for him in their thousands. Austerity is hurting - the young in particular, so this offers them a fairytale to get behind and believe in, that promises them a life of jobs, prosperity, and a world which is safe because everyone loves each other with no wars.
I know someone who has been a lifelong member of the Labour party and she is really excited by the takeup of new party membership - particularly amongst the younger population.
I just hope there are enough of us older ones with life experience who will get off our backsides and vote against him - for Britain's sake.
