This is part of the pre match interview on BBC but just wanted to point out his reaction to the name change.

I had started to like Pardew, but this kinda annoys me that he's not staying quiet on the issue and just managing the team.

I haven't seen the interview, can't get it to work for some reason. But surely if it's an interview that means he was asked about the renaming. He can either say "Sorry, no comment" and have a bunch of speculation over his opinion, or just answer the damn question and get the issue buried.
Good that he went for the latter.

He would've got mega bonus points from me had he quoted 'a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet'. Pards is cool.

unfortunately for him he can't say he agree's with it as it will go against the fan's but if he say's it's wrong he's openly criticizing his employers like I've said before he's stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Seriously, are we having a pop at him over this? I tell you what, how about from now on you go into work and have a go at the CEO (or equivalent) of your company everyone they do something you disagree with. The see how long you stay in the job. I am all for loyalty etc but at the end of the day it is his employer and we know their track record. Pardew has steadied the ship and he should just get on with focusing on the match on Saturday, not worrying about the politics.

This.

It's a diplomatic answer that you would expect to hear from any manager. He's not exactly going to say "It's a shocking decision. What was Derek and Mike thinking?".

Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has asked to meet Newcastle striker Hatem Ben Arfa when the Magpies go to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Ben Arfa suffered a broken leg in a challenge with de Jong when the sides met at the same venue in October 2010.

"The player has contacted him, which I appreciate as the manager of the other team," said Newcastle boss Alan Pardew.

"We have said after the game would be a good time - not before. Hopefully, that will then come to rest."

Frenchman Ben Arfa only returned to action in September after an 11-month absence from the game and he could line up against the league leaders, with Magpies forward Leon Best struggling to shake off a groin problem.

"I had a conversation with him [Ben Arfa] about it because I think you could carry some demons when you have an injury like that," added Pardew.

"But he was absolutely clear to me that he has no problem about going back there, no problem about facing their particular player.

"What I do know is, a year down the line - and it has taken that long - he is back somewhere near his best, and that's good news for us."

Third-placed Newcastle will be without French winger Sylvain Marveaux, who suffered a groin injury in the 2-1 win against Everton on 5 November.

Pardew revealed that Marveaux is likely to undergo surgery this week and could be out for "a while".

The Magpies manager also commented on the club's decision to rename St James Park 'The Sports Direct Arena' after owner Mike Ashley's company.

"For the traditionalists amongst our fans, I think it's something they are upset at," he said.

"But it is still in the same place and it's still the Gallowgate End and we still have your tradition of walking to the stadium from the centre of town.

"On the other side of the coin, of course, commercially, it will attract a big sponsor, we hope, and give us extra revenue to go forward."

This is quite funny seeing as it's a year late and at least Pards said they would only meet after the game. It's dumb mind games and very sad indeed that Man City/De Jong have to resort to it.

Here we go, he was asked about the renaming and when he gives an honest answer he's a puppet again, it's pathetic. What do you expect him to do? He's working for the most difficult owner in the country and by some of these comments, the most difficult fans.

Plus he's correct. His job is to manage the team which he's doing very well. The crowd staying behind him and the team is important to carry that on, the row over the stadium is nothing to do with him.

I don't think he can win with some people, he should be judged on how the team does, so for me he's a success.

Only two people here have called him a puppet, by no means 'all'.

I'm not having a pop, I just don't see why he couldn't just say nothing and concentrated on talking about the upcoming match like you pointed out.

Yes, poorly worded by me. Hate that some people will just jump on the bandwagon over nothing though.

Totally agree. The guy has done an excellent job and is completely stuck in the middle when it comes to questions like that, he simply can't win. I'd rather he said things like that and kept his job so he can keep us going strong.
