Refusing to answer the question would of just made a bigger fuss because the media would just interpret it in an OTT negative way. Personally I do not see the problem with what he said, he was asked the question and gave a diplomatic, sensible answer. The fact that some people are trying to make this into an issue is a bit pathetic really.

Then he gets slated for "not taking an interest". I really don't see what was wrong with his response.

for me, actually a very good interview.

as has been said, you cant slate your employer, he does however point out both points of view and is therfore playing it very smart. If you support the fans OR the board, either way, your life will be difficult!

Oh I totally agree that he pointed out both sides and understand you can't slate your employer. Ah well.

    Scenarios:

Pardew says stadium rename is stupid idea:

Pro: Traditionalist fans think 'ah thats much more like it from Pardew'
Con: Alienate and annoy your temperamental owner, known for sacking managers and people who speak out against him as often as he changes his underwear.

Pardew says stadium rename is just what happens nowadays and we should move with the times:

Pro: Keep boss happy and keep your job, thus keeping the team playing well and the prospect of a good term in office.
Con: Have several traditionalist fans calling you a puppet.

I know which makes more sense.

He is what some people would call a puppet, but "puppet" is the wrong word. he is simply an employee who has worked hard to steady the ship in the past 12 months, and has wisely decided that he isn't going to rock the boat now over something that has nothing to do with him. Those criticising him for this are in my eyes a disgrace to NUFC, I sometimes wonder if a few of our unbelievably thick fans actually want us to do well...

Who cares, he's there to get the team ready for the next match - not talk about commercial activities.

He was obviously asked about the renaming so can hardly keep out of the arguement. And what he said is true, the stadium does still have the same tradition etc I think most football fans (not just us) will still call it SJP.
Liked his come back when asked about City's goal scoring record "fortunatley I go there with the best defense in the league" <ok>
if his confidence is anything to go by I'd say we have a good chance to get something out of the game

clearly pardew is trying not to stir **** up but at the same time, he has to address the situation or else everyone would whinge if he didn't say **** all, so just ****ing dry up, he's doing well, obviously he doesn't want to **** this up, we need to be BEHIND newcastle, there are paths, if you stand there and spend your whole time, calling mike ashley and prick etc etc, then you're just fueling that, making it more real, easier for it to happen, if you want to change things, then do the things you actually want.

This is a difficult one for me. I have made my stance quite clear about the renaming, it is a disgrace and no more than a savvy businessman making a quick buck, using and abusing the clubs heriitage to do so. Now Pardew hasn't made this decision but it is difficult once you've been asked in an interview to not give an answer, because reporters then start the rumours he's unhappy. I imagine Pardew knew his views on the matter would not be welcomed by the fans, but I'm not gonna start hating him over this. He's wrong but we can't all agree on everything. Its hard for him to openly criticise them because he knows how that has gone for others and I'd imagine he is enjoying his job.

He annoyed me by playing it down and at the time of watching I was pretty miffed with his comments to be honest. To try and put it down to progress just pisses me off because it just isn't. But what can Pardew say? He can't say its not right and shouldn't happen because he won't be in a job. And if his own view is that this is progress, then that is the response he'll give. If you don't fall into line with these guys, you're a gonna so I can understand Pardews view. If he was from the area I'm sure he would understand why the majority of fans are so unhappy about it, and why it is not right. He has no real deep lying alliegence to the club at the end of the day, and probably doesn't understand why its a big issue for the fans.

It is the same old story. The Ashley haters thinking anybody who doesn't strongly echo their own views at every opportunity is a puppet.

Take a look at what Pardew said. He acknowledged that it was a decision that traditionalists wouldn't like, but he didn't state whether or not he felt the same (sensibly). He also pointed out that even if the name changed the place wouldn't and that St James' Park would always be St James' Park to the fans. Finally he commented that the extra revenue would help to take the club forward, which is true.

Sorry but anybody who wants to pick fault with that sensible and diplomatic response, from somebody who is in a no win situation, is just looking to stir up ****. Why not channel your energy into getting behind the manager instead of looking for ways to rock the boat!

Leazes etc. calling him a puppet, what would you have preferred him to say?
