Not exactly a copy of Les Miserables, but crucially inspired by it, most of the central themes are there and he intended it that way - a good friend of Victor Hugo who produced a work which actually became more famous than Hugo's work.
Not there yet. It turned out a much more psychological and introverted work than Hugo's.
Was it one of the Russians? I'm thinking Tolstoy (AK or even War and Peace) or Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Scattergun approach.
Just figured Crime & Punishment has a policeman in it and is introverted. Tried to re read it recently and realised my brain is not what it used to be.
Great book, read it some time ago, like you I don't think I have the staying power any longer in everything, not just reading
