Having looked this up it’s quite interesting. And a leather apron. The special day is a national holiday somewhere.
14th July is the day (I think).Beard, axe and leather apron - sounds like a Snow White fetish club!
Special day in July - Independance Day? Canada Day? 12th July in NI?
Sounds more like the mother in law preparing xmas dinner...Beard, axe and leather apron - sounds like a Snow White fetish club!

So, to summarize. Not lesbians (definitely not !), not mothers in law, not sailors in submarines. Stan was right about the date (he knows the answer anyway). They are subject to orders (not normally polite requests) and it has to do with a national holiday. Compared to others around them they walk quite slowly. It's not unknown for them to sing while walking.
Sorry Steels, nothing to do with the Vatican.Vatican guards?
Over to you Beth. When the French Foreign Legion march on Bastille Day they are headed by their Pionier Regiment - which is the only 'tradition' regiment in the whole French military. Their dress uniform is full beard, leather apron with a polished axe over the shoulder - traditional for the sapper units of the past. If they do not already have a beard then they are ordered to stop shaving in either May or June so that it is 'full' by Bastille Day. Take it away.French Foreign legion, they march on Bastille Day....and often have beards..I have seen Beau Geste
