I'd never heard of this before, but it's getting a bit of publicity up here today...50 Years ago, the 3rd match of the first Inter-Continental Cup between Celtic and Racing Club turned into The Battle of Montevideo, with 6 players sent off, police with swords on the pitch, and some of the most brutal tackles you'll ever see!!

That was the World Club Championship as it was then, the European Cup winners v the South American Cup winners. I remember virtually every match was like a war in those days. The following year Manchester United played Estudiantes of Argentina and that was almost as bad. Hair-pulling, spitting and knee-high tackles were the norm...

...and that was just from the Glaswegian drunken bully in the dugout. :)

I remember that night particularly well. Rangers got mugged on the park and Peter Lavers and I got mugged afterwards on the White City Estate.

When I was a boy back in the early 60s my father used to take me to a cinema on the corner of Northumberland Avenue and Trafalgar Square on a Sunday afternoon. They showed cartoons followed by a film from that era such as Laurel & Hardy, The Three Stooges, Charlie Chaplin etc., all were masters of comic visuals and timing. We then would go into the Strand where there was a Lyons Corner Teashop and I'd have my favourite Iced Sugar Bun and an Orange Squash, simple but happy times...
