It's a Swiss model to enable a league table without everyone actually playing each other.

It is what it is.

Last year there were two wild cards in the lower reaches..they threw the whole thing into chaos and side who finished high ended up playing them
We know what it is, we don't have to like it or not not prefer the old system.

We are already there imo.

Groups in the old format were always just a warm up but you got a clear seeding in the last 16.

The new league means top 8 is an advantage but only in number of games
The old league was short though and there was jeapordy in that you could go out if you didn't take it seriously.

How the **** RM and PSG made that a reality in the new format is beyond my comprehension.

I was willing to give it a chance, and I'm still undecided to a degree - but it does seem like there's really nothing to gain from coming in the top few places. That can lead to complacency, and it doesn't really solve the problem of a few dead rubbers that the old format suffered from.
Only way to solve dead rubbers is the original and by far superior product
If they need to tweak it you can seed it
Knockout eliminates the dead rubbers though

You mean the old European Cup format - knockout from the off?
Trouble is, we know UEFA just want more games and more dosh - they're not interested in fairness as long as the money keeps rolling in.

The top sides now have far less jeopardy

But if we take our English goggles off then the sides who can now "make it past" the league phase has increased.

This means more money for mid ranked teams but in reality they end up with a firmly big team from 8th to 16th beating the crap out of them in the round of 32.

So smaller leagues get a smidge more money, we get a boring league as nobody is watching the 3rd seed teams beating 4th seed teams etc and then we get another round of games for a last 32 thst also clogs up the calendar.

But those middle glut of clubs are all getting more cash and more games.

Totally agree, other than missing a game (or 2) what benefit does finishing in the top8 get you. In fact you are missing out on money as there is one less tie to get money in at the gate and for TV

PSG went through the extra round last season, made no difference to them.

Just make it top16 to go through, base the next round on table position and then 17-24 go into the EL

You get more money for finishing higher and winning more games.

Don't agree, much rather play each team home and away. It's fairer. With the draw as it is now, some teams are getting easier matches away than others it seems.

You also get a better assessment in regard to how you you are compared to another team if you play both home and away.

Does that matter though? Who cares how you compare to others? It’s about getting into knockouts and the teams of lfc quality should always do this.

It was the clubs , including ours , who wanted more money who forced UEFA to change EC into the CL and again it was the clubs who pushed for this type of format .

That's not true actually. The main driver of the change was Berlusconi (A C Milan owner at the time) who was horrified that the champions of both Italy and Spain were knocked out in the first round of the EC, together with wanting to gain financially personally by changing the format. Berlusconi wanted a new format which ensured the biggest teams from Europe's biggest league stayed in the competition longer. Oddly enough the other big driver for change was Rangers.

I think you're getting mixed up with the creation of the Premier League.

Yeah
Exactly what I meant
For me the EC was perfect
All league winners
Knockout format
All games had jeopardy
I understand the reasoning just don’t agree with the powers that be
I liked the EC

all the "big" european clubs formed a group and were pushing for the EC to be expended / financially more rewarding

They won la liga in 2020-21. Finished third i think last season after being in the hunt for most of the season.

Won 1, lost 1, drawn 2 of their league games so far this season, but that win came at the weekend, beating Villareal (who spurs beat 1-0) 2-0.

They're a decent side.

I've barely watched them since the last time we played them, but supposedly they've shifted slightly away from the dull football of those days. Having said that, Alvarez isn't available.

Either way, I'd expect a really dull first half at least, and wouldnt be surprised if it ends in a draw.

U19s playing v atletico too.

Hall; Esdaille, Pinnington, Lucky, Ayman; Upton, Nyoni; Morrison, Sonni-Lambie, Kone-Doherty; Wright

So nyoni wont be on the bench thats for sure even though he can be b list.

In other news will wright has just had the lfc striker curse strike him and he has been stretchered off sadly.

They were still dull when they had Aguero and then Felix up front

The creation of the PL and the CL happened at the same time in 1992. I have no memory of English clubs pushing on two fronts for new formats at the same time. I can find nothing that suggests what you are saying is correct. We have had one change after another, all money motivated, as you say and we'll no doubt see another new format in years to come.

Anyway ..... as you were. :bandit:
