Sensible signing if true, he’s better than Burge and could easily play in the championship if we go up.
Also knows the club, the area and the fans expectations, he really bought into it when he was here

Burge is canny for L1 just think Mannone is a cut above him, so whatever the club decides i know we will all get behind them, and look forward to promotion

Aye, that's the 'trialist' who has played a couple of games for the u23s. He looked canny in the Fulham game. Typical 'modern' keeper. Good with his feet and played the sweeper-keeper role. Think I read somewhere that Pickford recommend him following his release from Everton.

Hopefully this nonsense about signing an ex keeper who is now only third choice for his club will disappear.

Aye. For all he is better than what we have there’s some rose tinted specs here.

He is a cult hero for some wonderful moments, mainly the cup run, but he was never top drawer, wasn’t a Sorensen or whatever.

He’d be great for the level, and probs solid for Championship but he ain’t gonna win us 15 points or owt.

Not sure if he is better than what we have got. Never heard much about him apart from he’s slipped down the pecking order and not in demand by anyone.

Although I respect your view buddy, you seem disapointed at the idea that we are potentially interestested in a solid Keeper who is a third choice at another club, yet is arguably better than our current keeper.

As an ex coach....The average Keeper's fitness is way beyond that of an outfield player (fact)

Accept this - The average Goalkeeper, will, or can, play at the top level (depending on fitness) during an average four year peak between the ages of 29 - 34....(those stats were given in 1988)

However, add to this - because a keeper doesn't cover up to 5 miles per match (outfield players do) as a direct result, they have a longer age career.

And therefore, - we would all probably accept an idea of signing both old men, Manone and Defoe within a heartbeat.

I reckon that if he'd never kicked a ball for us I'd still be interested based on his pedigree. He's done it in the premier league and even played in the champions league and done well enough as far as I know.

If he was an outfield player with that background, arguably still at the peak of his career (33 no age for a keeper), I don't think there'd be many complaints if we were looking at them to get us out of league one.

Like I said mate, I’d take him as he’s better than what we have, but he’s not top class.

I wouldn’t say he had massive pedigree personally. What 18 months as first choice in PL?

He’s 33 and he’s played 200 or so games. He’d be a good buy for the level and a solid acquisition, to make out it would be some kind of major coup or a signing that would bat anyone’s eyelids away from Wearside is just wrong.

For the record, I’d be delighted for him to sign. I’m just not going to fantasy island about it.

I know he's not top class but that's never going to happen realistically, I'd say he's about as good as we could possibly get at the moment if we're sticking with the plan of not spending a lot for the time being and only looking at players who are keen to sign.

For me his pedigree is excellent for league one and good for the championship so from that point of view I'd be all over it. A player of that calibre at the peak of their career is spot on for what we should be looking at whether that's a keeper or a striker.

None of have any idea how he is performing as he has disappeared off the radar. He was a half decent keeper when he was with us, but the fact that he is not in demand at a higher level tells me he is not the keeper he was.

He had a catchy song I’ll give you that. He was a good shot stopper but was also prone to the odd mistake.

Aye agreed marra......but stats will always show goals conceded by a keeper, yeah?

....but the back four get no blame.

Every player on the field of play has obligations to go forward, and also defend the goal behind them.

Yet you never hear a keeper complaining about the back four, yeah ?

.....point being - CM, bad pass. CF, missed an open goal.....yet no worries........However, keeper makes one mistake during all game and we concede.

Result - blame only the last person in a formation defendiing the goal it'sself ?

    Think mate !

As recently as November last year he was facing up against Mbappe of PSG, if that's disappeared off the radar I think it might need fixing.

Monaco won the game by the way.

I'm 'guessing' that Mannone' was at his best during his time here.

He was a backup keeper before he came, and after leaving gradualy reverted to that role.
It seems improbable that he has improved since although I concede that we have dropped in standard.

But there is no way that this will, (would I hope), be anything but a 'sticking plaster solution', when something more long term would be better.
