Exactly what does this figure of 745,000 signify Angelic? Is it simply the number of people arriving in our country from elsewhere?
745,000 is a huge figure and understandably shocking. However, is our overall population set to increase by this number next year?
Less people are being born here - more couples than ever before are deciding not to have children - and there are people moving overseas - and people are dying.
When you say it’s ‘net’ migration are all those other factors being taken into account when quoting this frightening figure?
Not a loaded question btw - just wondering.
If our overall population is indeed increasing by that figure year on year then we are really in the sh1t - for logistical reasons trying to accommodate all those extra people year on year.
However, if those people coming in are simply replacing those who have died, moved elsewhere or simply not been born then it’s LESS worrying - I say less, rather than not worrying at all, because it’s still a concern because those people will not have a true allegiance to the UK and that could lead to fundamental cultural changes plus changes in our politics and foreign policies.
It’s not a loaded question at all
My understanding of it is that it’s the balance of those leaving the UK to settle elsewhere, minus those coming into the country legally such as when we offered to protect people from Hong Kong and Ukraine, or to work I.e care workers, or to study legally on student Visas
I’ve no issue with us protecting genuine refugees as opposed to those who arrive here illegally because they don’t like their own country and want to game our benefits system
But those studying which apparently make up over 200,000 can also bring their relatives with them (ridiculous) and after 5 years have elapsed they’re all allowed to stay
I understand that we offer some of the best education opportunities in the world, and if foreign students study and then get meaningful jobs in the UK afterwards then they should be allowed to stay as they will more than pay their way in society
But in my opinion, being allowed to bring along family members for the ride is a loophole that needs to be closed right now
Yes our birth rate is falling, so a government, whoever that may be need to find a way to encourage people to have more children, and make child care more affordable
I’ve been saying for ages that this country is fast becoming totally unrecognisable from the one I grew up in and it’s getting worse.
I’m happy to have controlled migration but it’s got to be firmly controlled and carefully vetted, not the free for all we have currently
Gross migration totalled 1.1 million, that’s the real total of arrivals. The population of Birmingham !
