Wages in social care are deplorably low and linked to the minimum wage. Migrant labour is being used to keep costs and wages down thus helping to continue the righteous cycle of keeping working class care workers poor.
Social care really does need looking at, governments of all colours over promise and under deliver on it. It needs to be put on a par with nursing.

I watched this on Sky News last night and it amazed me:

Now, everyone knows my views on Brexit - and please believe me this is not a dig or being sarcastic.
According to this feature, the immigration numbers rocketed at the time of Brexit.
As a remainer, I believed that Brexit would make absolutely no difference whatsoever to immigration levels, because the problems were people arriving from OUTSIDE the EU and all those who thought Brexit would ‘fix’ things were simply misguided.
However, I would never have thought that numbers would INCREASE so significantly. I’m astonished.
This can’t be a coincidence. The timeline is clear, but I still can’t understand how Brexit has caused such an influx.
Can’t be correct mate, they said 50k are illegals.
I read on here that everyone is, and not interested in working.

I have no problem with people coming to this country if they can support themselves and any family they bring. The workplace is a competitive market and UK citizens shouldn't be protected from having competition for jobs and careers. I have two son in laws. One is French and is a manager in the hospitality industry, the other is half Lebanese and an airline pilot. Neither born in the UK. My uncle was half Indian, born in India, served and saw action in the RAF before a career with British Airways. His children have become teachers and owned their own IT business employing a number of people. Does anyone want to tell me they shouldn't be allowed in the UK?

Granted the numbers we have now are very high, I would start by looking at students being allowed to bring relatives. However if someone comes to the UK and studies medicine and then stays and works in the NHS maybe its not such a bad thing.

Brexit has not cause the increase in immigration. Immigration figures have been rising since the 2000's. The UK's immigration surge started with Nu Labour and Blair, that surge continues to go upwards.

Sweden in the EU has experienced immigration proportionally far higher than the UK, one fifth of what was vey recently an ethnically and culturally homogeneous country is now foreign-born.
As countries across Europe go to the centre right due to various Governments inability or unwillingness to curb migrants and often the associated major issues that different cultures think they’re entitled to above and beyond local laws, the lesions are finally sinking in, albeit years too late
There were and possibly still are open battles with guns and grenades on the streets of Stockholm between rival Muslim immigrant gangs, which, understandably, the average peace loving Swede doesn’t want to see or be associated with at all and understandably so.
The latest country after Italy and Sweden to start to ban all immigration is Holland which will include the banning of any new mosques being built
Europe, including the UK has been way too afraid of being called racist whilst not actually dealing with the basic problems that it faces including Imams who teach hate against us and Jews in our city centres
Time that we and western governments faced reality
People who live here should be forced to abide by British values and laws
If they don’t like it here then find another country to live in with people of similar outlooks

My partner is half Polish. However when her family moved here due to being refugees due to a unholy combination of the Nazis/Communists and later to join other family members immigration numbers were low. Immigration levels prior to the fifties saw netflows out of the Country, not into it, then decades of net immigration in the tens of thousands to the nineties were numbers fluxed between 40,000 to a negative territory in 1993 then rising from 97 onwards.

From the 2000's the UK is seeing a sky rocket. A historical exception. We are not seeing very high, we are seeing unique. The UK cannot support this unique unless we can magic up thousands of new schools, hundreds of universities, hundreds of hospitals, x of surgeries, x colleges, x police stations, x ?? roads and transport links and build a unfathomable number of homes. There is what should be a duty of government to protect the populace there.

I think what has happened to Sweden is tragic. It is also logical. If in decades a society goes through that upheaval, and transforms itself at lightening speed to a position where a large swathe of its society do not share the shared values of the nations state there have to be consequences.

Not correct, the massive increase has been since the conservative govt relaxed the rules for the rest of the world post brexit.

It may not have caused it - but can you explain the leap in 2019 which coincided with it? The biggest leap in the history of the UK?

Of course Brexit has led to the recent huge surge in immigration - look at the graph in this link, it couldn’t be clearer

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67515674

Hundreds of thousands of Europeans went back after Brexit because they didn’t feel welcome or because they didn’t want to settle here permanently. That directly caused shortages in adult social care, construction, hospitality, agriculture etc which the government then filled by throwing open the doors to the rest of the world.

The government actually lost control of our borders after Brexit, contrary to the claim by Brexiteers that it would enable us to “take back control”.

Listening to these Tory politicians and their apologists blaming immigrants/ “lefty lawyers” / Labour / the BBC / the EU / liberals/ uncle tom cobley and all for high immigration and the state of the country is absolutely nauseating and completely hypocritical. The buck stops with them. No excuses.

And more Tory politics is not the solution. You don’t ask the arsonist to put out your house fire.

It is not proportionally the biggest leap, but an initial increase was inevitable due to post brexit migration systems.

The Conservatives replaced free movement for Europeans with a global visa system with no limits, that has lower barriers than when the UK was in the EU. The Tories created a significant increased immigration by use of health care and skilled worker visas.

figures indicate it started in 2000 and the estimate is that the number here now is approaching 12million to house that many additional people .
Since I was born the population has increased by 19 million - 20 million.......... about 4 times the number of people living in Scotland ... when you go into perspective 10 million immigrants would be double the population of Scotland and all its utilities [GAS WATER ELECTRIC SEWAGE etc etc .. thats double the current BTW] so where have built more than 150 sewage ttreat works in the past 20 years?

So what's the story in Dublin ?

Seems the Garda are a little reluctant to say.
Usually means........hang on we can't say.

The people protesting and rioting were far right lunatics according to the Garda. Always are this shadowy far right outfit who have bugger all power, invisible then everywhere in thousands when it kicks off and all to blame like bogey men!!!!

Wonder what the Costa del Sol thought of us nice Brits moving there in the 70/80s

all over it luvvin the money brought but time moves on as it has here and so will the sketch.

There was a massive rise from 2000 on with shady Tone and the next lot of shadies massive rised it further with Dave then nutty Boris x Trussy and Fishi putting **** off rises on the massive rises.

Exactly this

Backed up 100% what posters said. Big rises after 2000. Too high then far too high now. Time to slam the hand brake on!!!

Below is from the ONS. We can debate whether it was too high or not from 2000. What is not really up for debate is the large increase post Brexit and post Covid ( when many EU nationals returned home ) The increase more than outweighs the figure returning home to the EU
