I think that it is a pretty reasonable question to ask, why would a manager want to stay another 4 years at a club where so much of the playing side of his job was controlled by one man? and also having a non supportive backroom staff?

I have no problem with LJ being given the job (not my choice) but no problem at all. My problem is with the 2nd contract. You and several others keep piling up the excuses as to why LJ failed and was sacked. Players being sold, those players not being replaced like for like and now a non supportive backroom staff, but still he stayed and signed a 4 year contract, that's the bit I cannot understand. Surely by then he must have known that it could only end one way? with the people responsible for the excuses staying in position and him carrying the can?
Now I will address the highlighted question. In my chosen profession I ended up in a position that I would describe as the best job in the world, I worked hard for 25 years to attain that position and virtually from day one, that position was undermined daily by 4 people and a piss weak 'boss' who allowed the said 4 people to get away with it. They questioned and criticised everything that I did, but then bizarrely lightened their daily workload by dumping more stuff upon me, they even falsified documents to make it look as though they had performed those duties, one of them asked me to falsify legal documents, documents that could be used in a criminal court of law, when I refused my boss tried for 6 months to change my mind, knowing that without my signature those documents were a ticking time bomb, to this day I have no idea how this problem was overcome. I took what I could endure but eventually said "do you know what? f*** it, this will end badly for me in one way or another", so I left the best job in the world, because I had too much self respect for myself. As a postscript to this in hindsight I should have heeded the evidence before me, my predecessor in my role and my best friend eventually drank himself to death less than a year after his retirement and my appointment, I knew for a while that he had developed a drink problem, but was unaware of it's severity, luckily I got out in time. And as a further postscript several years later my replacement ended up in a heavy industrial tribunal and subsequent court case.
Is not an unreasonable thing to ask.
The playing side was not controlled by one man. Mr Johnson had supportive backroom staff he had brought in = Mr Johnson was clearly comfortable in the environment and willing to commit further to it.

That with respect was not a answer to the reasonable, and it was a reasonable question.
Mr Johnson was already at the club he played for and had a significant period in his role to inform his choice of a further four years.
Mr Johnson was motivated by the money provided by a four year extension or he was content with the role and support and resources he was provided with, content enough to make a extended commitment.
There is not a lot of grey here.

He could have a job for the next 5 years
But equally could be gone after 10 games of next season.
Despite what the new owners say, results and league position will be the only and deciding factors, and for me, L1 next season looks potentially more tricky than it did in the one just finished.
The likes of Portsmouth, Charlton and Ipswich will want to improve their final league positions considerably next year, there will be a beaten Playoff finalist in Lincoln or Blackpool to add to the list, and throw in Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham and maybe Wycombe who have all just been relegated and it could get interesting.

Your description regarding your job made interesting reading and I understood your plight....and I say good for you for standing what you believe in.
My defending of LJ is direct response when he gets annihilated for the job he did for us. I believe he was fairly well thrown into the deep end with a club that didn't have many of the fans on board when he was a player and then coach, unfairly IMO. but we all have our opinions on that. Who in their right mind would turn that job down? Incidentally, I was as shocked and slightly underwhelmed when he was first appointed......but I do actually think he did a decent job....just maybe it came along too soon for him!
I think his title of coach was part of the problem IMO, especially with the 2nd contract......not the same control as it seems that NP has demanded, probably to do with experience and having a stronger personality......like you've said, at least NP can say, he will die by his own sword. I imagine and would hope that LJ will learn by his mistakes and develop in his attempt to become a better manager.. Personally I believe he has the tools to become a very good manager, but at this moment in time, over thinks things, on the border of over tinkering, trying to achieve perfection.....which IMO is not possible with mediocre players along with disruption to key players that become a structure to build with...
Answer to yours and Clifton's question regarding signing the 2nd contract....I maintain and believe, he really thought he could achieve his goal and get BCFC into the prem and had he, what an achievement that would have been for us and his CV.......I don't think, many at his age etc would have turned it down, plus worth a lot more than the contract itself. I don't think he took the job for his own financial gain from our club..

Surely that goes for NP and most managers.....it's all about results............If we lose our first dozen games or carry on where we left off this season....fans will soon get restless and start digging out the famous banners!!

With a very small exception, everybody accepts the pluses he brought during his time with us. I will go as far to say that I have fonder memories of him as a manager than as a player and to me that was part of his problem, he built his midfields in his own image as a player, weak and that is where all of our ills on the field stem from IMHO, if your midfield do not adequately protect your defence, you will leak goals, if your midfield cannot adequately supply reasonable chances for your strikers, you will not score enough goals to win enough games and if you have a midfield with no leaders to organise who goes, who stays, directing other midfielders into potential danger areas, you will too often get caught out with all of your midfield and probably both full backs ahead of the ball and leaving 2 at the back (if your lucky) against quick breaking counter attacks and a ball over the top and too many fans blaming the defence for leaking goals and the strikers for not scoring goals, the midfield is called the engine room for a reason.
Opinion is of course fine but it also has to have a basis in fact. My problem is the excuses that are used in his defence, those excuses ran out the moment he put pen to paper for the 4 year contract, because even though he publicly said he had the final say in all transfers, most of us doubted that, he knew by then without any doubt exactly what he was signing and where his place in the clubs dysfunctional playing side of the business was, not only with transfers but the day to running of the football side and whatever problems there were with the backroom staff and he fully accepted it.
For me the biggest indictment of how badly run the playing side of our club had sunk to is that a young player, our only major investment last summer, had to not once but twice go it alone because he believed that his in club treatment was worsening his rehabilitation and nobody at our club not even the man who signed him publicly supported him and shame on them all. Even Mgee was incredulous when he reported that the club were not even using the fantastic private sports clinic facilities in Bristol, players apparently were being sent to somewhere like Worcestershire for scans FFS. Call me cynical but IIMHO there is probably only one reason for that.

I was an LJ defender for a long time on here but I have to say, I'm fully in the fraud club now. I think he's an okay manager, certainly not rubbish, but all of this business lingo, hearing it once again in his interviews up at Sunderland is just infuriating. He's doing the exact same as Ashton, trying to make himself sound cleverer than he is, and only idiots buy it.
I'd bet he's actually a decent L2 manager to be fair, or even at a smaller L1 club, but certainly not at the level he's been at in the past couple of years.

If the job was not ideal common sense would be to leave. He signed a extension and ****ed it ..
They'd never do it because it would be too underwhelming but they really need someone in who knows how to get out of League One rather than a big name. I'm not knocking Sunderland fans because we were equally as arrogant when we got Steve Cotterill in to be fair, I didn't want him anywhere near us at the time, but someone in that mould is exactly what they need. In the same way that the sags actually had a decent choice in Clarke to get them out of the Conference, it was the right fit. Sunderland don't need a big name, they need someone who is perfect for League One.
