So torque reduction is to warn the cars behind that they may not be accelerating as quickly as you'd normally expect? Not a great explanation of that bit for me.
Torque reduction during a normal period of acceleration will mean a sudden reduction in the rate of that acceleration, which could easily catch out a following driver, especially if already close. Conversely, if at an already high speed (close to top speed, for instance) the torque reduction will cause the car to actually slow down. Either way, safety is improved if following drivers are given an opportunity to benefit from a visual warning.

It's ridiculous, they start developing for 2014 from mid 2013? And they are having problems like this, and when their cars are **** they blame the lack of preparation.
Why can't we have a full grid with fully optimized cars, at this rate Mercedes might just walk it.
Yeah. It seems a simple enough question doesn't it, EMSC?! The problem is that the process is extremely complicated; more so this year because of such dramatic changes to regulations. Simulators can only do so much and this is the first proper shake-down.

Vettel is correct in saying previous driving styles mean nothing now. Who knows who will be the best suited for this model.
Last week, I'd thought about writing an article on this. I want to remain brief, but I have enough time to say this:

Driver work-load is now higher than ever before. This puts extra emphasises on intelligence, awareness, and calculated reaction. Therefore, drivers who need to think less about keeping a car on the black stuff will tend to reap reward by having 'extra' mental capacity to cope with less instinctive ('new') ideas, technologies and apparatus. And I'll go so far as to say that those driver's who are happy with a loose rear-end will tend to do better, since the extra torque of the turbo units, plus far greater use of ERS in both power output and availability, will tend to present a bigger challenge to those who prefer a very stable rear end. We will likely see some very different set-ups from (some) team mates, which, especially in this first year, could present headaches for development, and perhaps even some resentment between drivers!

Many members of this forum will have a good idea of the drivers of the past few years, and I believe would not go far wrong to put two and two together…

Ferrari said:
Allison on Kimi: “Very strong, incredibly precise”
Jerez de la Frontera, 29 January –A good start with Kimi Raikkonen and James Allison on the same wavelength at the end of the second of four days of testing at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain.

“We have obtained some good baselines from which to continue the development of the F14 T,” said the Scuderia’s Technical Director, talking to www.ferrari.com. “We are working mainly on car reliability and so far, we can claim to be reasonably satisfied because, even though we are talking about a car that’s almost totally new, we haven’t encountered any particular problems. We are also happy with the data parameters we have seen in terms of cooling, as well as those relating to aerodynamic downforce: both of them have matched our expectations.”

Asked for an opinion on Kimi’s second debut in red, Allison had this to say. “He is still the same strong driver, with his usual phlegmatic approach,” added the Englishman with a smile. “It’s difficult for him to get over excited about something, but he gives the engineers the feedback they need to do their job. He might not say much, but he is incredibly accurate when it comes to explain what needs to be done to make the car quicker.”

Allison confessed to not having paid the slightest attention to what the other teams have been doing, therefore he is unable to give an opinion on how competitive the F14 T might be. “There’s too much to do to think about the others. We have to keep an eye on every detail, because it only takes the smallest thing to leave you stranded. Between now and Melbourne, we will have to organise every last detail to be ready for the first race.”

Some of the more obvious examples re: previous post…

  • Happy with loose rear end: Several drivers come to mind, but none more so than Hamilton.
  • Intelligence and awareness: Once again, there at least half a dozen obvious candidates; but Vettel must get a mention here, as should Button.
  • Differences between team-mates (with the potential for fall-out and/or loss of direction of development): Ferrari could have the biggest headache of a!!
;)

He admitted himself that they should have put their efforts into 2014 earlier than they did last year. They have themselves partly to blame for this if it goes balls up. The next 2 days are crucial for them and Renault to get things right.

I think the fact Vettel went home early today suggests they don't have high hopes for a good final two days. He'd surely have insisted on having tomorrow morning like Button has.

If that's the case then you have to fear for them going into Melbourne because the test in Bahrain will be even tougher on reliability. They're already rumored to have cooling issues with the car. Red Bull have big problems.

We all know Cosicave is somebody of stature, but we should leave it at that as expressed before.

Bring it on Ferrari and Renault: http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/2...ged-2013-mclaren-not-apparent-on-mp4-29-debut

Button revealed that all the Mercedes teams had been running different kinds of programmes to understand the engine and admitted that, somewhat against the grain in the usually cut-throat world of F1, they could all help each other.

"Looking at the timesheets today it's very interesting because we're running a very different programme to [Nico] Rosberg and Mercedes," he revealed. "We're running very different engine modes, we're trying different things, so we're getting a lot of information from both cars. Also with [Williams driver Valtteri] Bottas and with [Force India's Sergio] Perez as well.

"So there's a lot of information, a lot of mileage. I think it's 75 per cent of the mileage done by an F1 car has a Mercedes engine. You could say we're in good shape that way as long as it continues like that. We all need to work together. Obviously at the end of the day we're all here to fight each other as teams but the more information that we can share over the next weeks and months can really make a difference to our championship."

Good to see there's at least some common sense in F1. Yes they will be arch rivals in a few months, but its much easier to have one or two rivals than five or six <ok>
