Not really though some people have learning difficulties and of course they have memories etc. but they certainly function differently to most people, especially people with very severe learning difficulties/mental illnesses. What about a coma patient who you knew was going to wake up in a few months now lets say when they do they loose all there memories thats essentially the same thing but with your knowledge I would hope you would agree to keep them alive untill they do wake up.
I see that essentially the human life is a development a fertisiled egg is just as much human as you or I yet in another stage of development and I think starting from the fertilised egg untill death makes sense as to how you describe a human life.
I wouldn't feel comfortable deciding to take a life on the basis of their future prospect although I can see how that decision may well come from compasionate origins. Practically we really need to improve adoption as a way of allowing a way out for woman.
I can see the sense in your argument, but ultimately I don't feel comfortable as defining human life on brain function. Anyway I've made my point you have too, unfortunately I need to do some actual work. It was reassuring to have a civilized debate about such an emotional subject although I would say that it is very hard to argue well on the internet so I hope my points haven't been misinterpreted.
No that's ludicrous. And besides, skin cells have a complete genome. So does hair. Is having a haircut immoral? Because technically hair is human.
It's not arbitrary it's based on common sense. If the foetus can survive outside the womb, abortion isn't allowed.
If you truly regard human life as precious then you will respect the lives of the prospective mothers and their right to have the kind of life they want. If you regard the life of an unborn embryo as more important than a woman's rights to self-determination then I'd respectfully suggest you've got your priorities wrong.
Unlike the UK, where we have a Centre-Right Conservative Party, a Centre-Left Labour Party and the Lib-Dems, who swing both ways, depending on whose votes they're after, the USA has a Centre Right Democrat Party and a Centre-a bit-more-Right Republican Party. In many ways there's little to chose between them, which is why it tends to be the Charisma of the two Presidential candidates that tends to woo the voters rather than policy.
On that note I think Obama will just hang on, but either way, I don't think the result will make a great bit of difference.

The modern republican party is certainly not centre-right. It has some members who fit that description but it is overall very right-wing.
Ok I've concluded already (my last post) but just quickly what was ludicrous about what I said. Skin cells have a complete genome but are just one cell in part of an organism not the whole organism (like the egg is at that point). Again you miss my point why is survival outside the womb an indicator as to whether someting is human or not? It may 'feel' like it but why because something is living at that stage in its life in a womb does that mean it isn't human? Finally read my above post, I do respect woman. I don't want them to be vicitimised. But if you follow the logic in my argument then there are two human lifes at stake here, one may get inconvienced go through difficulties etc. the other would be killed. That is the only reason I'm against abortion for the protection of the human babies not the persuction of women.
Disagree. I think the Democrats in many ways are more of a left-wing party than any of ours, and the Republicans are becoming more and more of an extreme right-wing party, what with the very popular Tea Party movement. Most of the Republicans I saw in the primaries would be laughed off stage in this country for being too far from centre.
The Democrats and Obama do have left-wing policies but they struggle to get them through Congress. People criticise Obama for not getting enough done, but they forget that he's not a dictator, and it's not a case of what he says goes.
An embryo is not the whole organism either. That's the point of the 24 weeks limit. Not to say it isn't human before that point, but to say it isn't a person. Skin cells are human, but they are not a person. If you can make that distinction, then you should understand the reason for that limit.
To equate killing a person with killing an embryo, and calling embryos "human babies", shows exactly the kind of misunderstanding I referred to when I said all anti-abortion arguments are based on misunderstanding.

That's nice following the ideology that "every vote counts", but let's be fair, it doesn't.
If I was a US citizen and wanted to vote Stein or any other third party candidate, I don't think I'd bother voting - I can see why Stein is considered a better candidate than Obama and Romney but don't know enough about Stein to say she's better than Obama and Romney... though better than Romney is probably a safe bet.
Even though Obama hasn't done great (mainly because he's been unable to implement his policies), he is without a doubt a better candidate than Romney.
I saw the documentary with Andrew Marr yesterday, I was shocked by how violently they opposed a National Health Service.
As it happened, I have just returned from an NHS Hospital. What great people, superb people, and proper care and thoughtfulness.
I guess that makes me a bloody commie.

Fair point Joe and I couldn't care less one way or the other as politicians are all ****s but pushed too choose I'd vote Romney as he's effectively an American Tory but as it won't impact on my life then I don't care
As I said Obama is an American Labourite so for that reason alone I'd rather he goes as we all know the ****ing disaster what the last Socialist government did too Britain which we'll be living with the consequences for a very long time

What are you talking about? I haven't said anything about their policies so how the **** do you know whether I'm familiar with them or not? For the record, I've been engrossed in the whole thing and have very good reasons for supporting Obama, unlike your ****ty reason of "the novelty wearing off". If you really are 40 years old, I weep for humanity.
