The team between around 98 and 01 was a joy to watch. It had a bit of everything. The best strike force we are ever likely to see with support from either wing. Summerbee was one of the best crosses of a ball I’ve ever seen and Johnson and Gray on the left linked up so well. We had a good goalkeeper and with players like Makin, Ball, Rae and Butler we were up for any fight we found ourselves in. There were just partnerships all through the team that clicked.

Whether by luck or design, Reid put together a hell of a team. It fell apart when Makin, Summerbee and Clark fell out with him or the club and Quinn was never replaced (which was never going to be an easy job). The rebuild was a disaster with players like Wright, Piper, Flo and Babb, to name just a few, brought in.
That team was the best I have seen, born 1975 so not much to compare it with.

Always felt we were a threat going forward and with ball, makin, rae you knew we could fight if needed.

That team would and did run through walls for the shirt

You're right about Summerbee had that great knack of being able to get in a great cross without actually beating the fullback.
Reid tried to replace Quinn with Flo. That was a disaster although he looked the part he just wasn't that kind of player much happier with the ball to feet.
He was supposed to partner Phillips but in reality was a similar kind of player.
Did well in Scotland because he didn't really have to try too hard probably one of the laziest players I've seen.
Spent a lot of time in Glasgow over the years the great line at the time (probably an urban myth)
was Alex McLeish on the touch line shouting to Flo "Tore start warming up ... your coming off"

Someone with experience for me. As far as I'm concerned we've already made a big gamble and I don't want to compound it by getting someone untried in or anyone who has failed with us before.

Dream team for me, as in not massively realistic, would be Allardyce with Phillips as his ass man and Rae on the coaching staff. Someone would need to make it clear to Sam that we don't want any dodgy under the table deals though.

More realistically Stendel I guess.
This!

Not in any order of preference...
1. Clough
2. Hughton
3. Cook

I think Keane for a second spell but then I constantly talk myself out of it.... Id love SKP at the club but not sure about a managerial capacity for fear we would turn on him...

As many have said we need someone who has experience and some success.

That rules Phillips out, if he had done a job elsewhere fair enough, but just because he has played here that is no credential for managing the club.

Keano is also a no as he has basically failed at every single job he has taken since managing us.

I haven't a clue who would come or not but my shortlist/wishlist would be:

Allardyce - doubt he would have any interest without a wheelbarrow of cash

Hughton - vastly experienced and would get us out of league one.

Pearson - probably my preferred choice with Phillips as his number 2.

Stendel - loved the way Barnsley play and the enthusiasm that he has, think he is exactly what we need. He hasn't had a long managerial career but is something different and worth the risk.

Stendel for me
His style of play and enthusiasm would be a breath of fresh air

Wish people would just put to bed notions of
'Hard Men' managers like Pearson and keane being the answer. They are not these days and it has been a while since they were. Keane has been an utter failure since he left safc and reality is that he needs a bottomless chequebook otherwise he is snookered. Pearson likewise has done nothing since he left and his interpersonal skills coupled with his belief in his own infallibility would have him at odds with every man and his dog within 6 months.
SKP
Oh great he scored goals for us therefore he loves and 'gets' us! What absolute frog5hit. He couldnt wait to leave. Even though he had an ok career and aspires to be a manager, 10 years on he still remains stuck being the one who sets out the cones and sweeps dressing rooms.
If he is a manager why has he not thrown his hat in the ring somewhere like hartlepool? Proper managers like fergie, clough and shankly were happy to start at the bottom. Is he too good for this?

sorry but there is no way a midfield of ball and Rae would allow teams to over run us or players to not be up for the fight

All the names linked seem to be a bit of a risk.understandable given we are in league 1. Out of the names linked, I like the sound of the ex Barnsley manager Stendel.

Stendel. He went to a club with the Barnsley fans to thank them for their support after he was sacked. Their fans are gutted about it.

Ball was a slow midfield plodded. The c'ship was as good as he was ever going to get. He always gave 100% but his lack of ability meant that 100% didnt add up to much.
Rae...meh
