Define a 'proven manager'...?
It's the nature of the beast that if you're an aspiring upper-mid table (top 10 or so budget) championship club, then any 'proven' championship manager will have a couple of **** ups on their CV. Those that don't have, will be holding out for a PL club in distress or a parachute Championship club - so then you're faced with choosing between 3 options: Overpaying or offering more favourable terms than would perhaps be in the clubs longer term financial interest; bringing in someone from abroad, or taking a risk on an up and coming 'domestic' coach.
It's probably an irony that Dawson's success so far with his 'domestic' (sic) approach has probably led the owners to consider others with a similar profile to his.
