Not sure what to make of this Karanka gadgie. I never take any notice of the Smog Monsters so have no idea about his past exploits with them. He appears to be splitting opinion on here, so perhaps not the best appointment if it comes off.

I would love Big Sam back, but that's never going to happen, so I've no idea who would best suit us, but Short and Bain have to get it right this time or we're doomed I tell ya!

Paul Cook with Reidy as his number two would be my pick.

Cook absolutely seems the stand out if we are going along the up and coming route.

I’ve said a few times over the last week that he’s from below, Portsmouth was a huge job and he absolutely bossed it. Wigan were always going to be strong, but that brings challenges.

He stands out for me from the few from the lower leagues that we’ve been linked with, Portsmouth is a big old club that’s had a rough old ride, and he got them back on the up.

There are definite parallels and I’d certainly get behind that. There are a few candidates cropping up now, thank christ, because the first few links were terrifying.

Cook only left Portsmouth for Wigan in the summer and has already ruled himself out

I don’t think that means a great deal he’d have a decision to make if we actually approached for him.

Reality is we are unlikely to either way.

Definitely mate. I think I'd be happy with him, he seems to be doing a very decent job with Barnsley considering the resources he has to work with.

I hope to buggery that whoever it is gets decent money to spend or nobody will fancy it. It needs to happen for us to stay up so I think they will.

They'll get a canny wage - enough to buy themselves a few CDs and a PS4 and stuff for their kids for Christmas.

Oh you meant spend on players in January - Not a chance!!!!

This club couldn't arrange a pi55 up in a brewery. 9/10 days after they sack a manager only 17 minutes after a game and they haven't appointed anyone. Simply embarrassing. I am really beginning to wonder, how Short became rich via business and how Bain has remained working in football if this is an example of their joint work ethic.

Has hasn't ruled himself out. He said this

Wigan boss Paul Cook rules out Sunderland job the headline
“This is football. As a manager, if you’re doing well, then there will be speculation. All the speculation is good, but I’m very happy to be here.

“This club is a very happy place to be at the moment, and long may that continue.

“It’s great when you get plaudits, and people are speaking about you well.

“But I’d rather be concentrating on my job here, and working hard to get better.

“I’m very lucky at this club to be backed by a lot of good people, and together we have one target – and I think everyone knows what that is.

“I’m more than happy here, and I can only reiterate that time and time again.

“The problem with football these days, is we’re all clamouring for something – and we can clamour for it too quick.

“For me at the minute, we’re in the midst of being involved in a really good season, we’re doing extra work ahead of the transfer window, and everyone has to stay focused.”

Pretty common for managers to make those sounds than move. Simon Grayson said this and 14 days later he was manager.

Simon Grayson delivers another blow to Sunderland's manager search the headline

“As far as I’m concerned there’s a lot of speculation about a lot of different jobs, but I’m fully committed to working out what we’re doing for the season at Preston,”

“I don’t consider it (the speculation) whatsoever until someone says something different, whether it’s Sunderland or any other job.

“We’ve had a good couple of years in the Championship and we want to keep improving. We were on the periphery of the play-offs last season and just ran out of steam in the back end of the season.

“I’ve been there just over four years now and really enjoyed my time. You just get on and do what you do and I’m focused on trying to get things right at Preston.

“I’m fully committed to Preston and, if anything changes along the way, that’s just football.”

Him joining them this season means nowt either. He won't be an expensive buy out. Not saying it will happen like, just saying the media spin bollocks, even to the point what they're saying doesn't reflect the quotes in their own article.

Could be anyone at this point. Could be a completely left field appointment.

Cook, Heckingbottom and Hurst are my top choices so would be happy with that myself.

I dunno, I think Short's had his gamble with doing things dirt cheap and it hasn't worked, if we don't strengthen in January then he must see it as a very real possibility we'll go down again and he does not want that to happen.

I don't think he'll be happy to keep his wallet shut and hope the new manager does the business. Unless we're getting one of Monty's choices then it's too risky.

Rumours out that Bain has approached Luton to talk to Nathan Jones. Our next 'favorite' no doubt.

May as well just liquidate the club If we are seriously considering a coach with less than two years experience managing in league 2
