I'd imagine after being at the club 2 months before being appointed interim manager for a team that was essentially relegated that it would be pretty hard for him to get the players playing for him.
Not sure who he's highly thought of by. He was also assistant to Steve Kean at Blackburn...

Rather than picking names out of a hat, it appears to me they've picked a British coach that Les has trust in but is also someone who's been around British football for their career and can also speak fluent French.

Eric was in France (as a player) from the mid 80s to the early 90s so Claude knows exactly who he is.
