New layout

The limit is based on how many requests it makes in 10 seconds and trying to fine tune that accurately for everyone is a bit of a mare. Certain Asian locations are being blocked, but they will probably redirect out of somewhere else eventually. First complaint came from a Starlink user. Bots being the pain of our life at the mo. I will keep an eye on what complaints are generated and the frquency, hence I can't react to every request, just guage how it is overall. I do seem to get more feedback from Apple users, whether that's significant or not, I don't know - someone suggested earlier it was, on the Hull board I think it was.
Cheers bubba.

A good example of the sort of feedback I'd be expecting. Reason being we are trying to stop bots and how many requests are done in a certain time period...

Happened to me again just now. What’s strange I clicked back on my browser and it cleared. I was reading some Leeds posts, I put a message up myself about Xhaka to Chelsea, then clicked through to Premier League > Sunderland > Transfers then their transfer page never loaded, the 1015 error did.

It feels it is kicking in if you click different pages too quickly or try to navigate too fast

Yep,I've had difficulty getting in again this morning. It told me I was banned to start with, then let me log in after a couple of attempts.
This platform is very unpredictable and unsatisfactory.....not a patch on the previous one imo.

I frequently have problems getting on to the site, and I’ve had a couple of occasions recently where I’m told I’ve been banned. I just close it and try again and it lets me in. This is on my iPhone

Same problem I have to go all around the site until it lets me know I’m lucky to get onto this part when I post I’m kicked and have to start the log in and chase around part again
It’s now becoming a bit silly just to be able to interact on a forum
That and other things is keeping me off this place
Which I’ve been on for 14 years and other sites and enjoyed the interaction and banter
If this forum is going to keep banning me and making it difficult I don’t know what I’m going to do
Love it on here

Apologies mate. You are not banned, no one is banned and have not been for a long time. It's just a generic message that code gives out, whether it's our site or anyone elses site.

The reason people have not been able to get on the site at times, or it's just been lefting hanging and very frustrating even for me, is because the bots attack us, constantly, every single day, I expect AI probably has a tad to do with it as well, making it easier for the bots to do that.

We set a threshold of how many requests can be made per 10 seconds, the problem is adjusting to a level that does not affect humans, but we cannot rule out there will be some incovenience, it's finding the balance, again difficult because people are affected in different ways.

I'd imagine every site goes through this, we have seen where big retailers have been taken down for months from hackers, and if they can't stop it what chance have we. A basic way of explaining what we are up against.

We've had to block a couple of Asian countries that the bots seem to be coming out from, but I expect it will not be long before they divert to coming out of somewhere else.

It's getting to the stage where even I hate coming on. The main problem for me was when the site was hanging, when the bots were coming at us, you just feel helpless. And I hate that it is pissing everyone off now because the actions to stop the bots, knock on to humans.

I've not been booted out the system nor had the messages pop up for me, but I'm a bit slow and not like the youngters with their fingers on fire.

There is no one fix that will fit all but I can feel a Churchill speech coming on...

"We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender..."

Enjoy your Sunday people.

Cheers for all this and likewise.

Any idea why bots would want to attack this site. It’s not like there are financially transactions happening. Or could they be after personal data to then link with other data?

Most bots are just collecting data eg AI, search engines and adverts but nowadays they can be used to deny service or access

I'll give you the AI explanation, but before I do, I'll speak what my thoughts say...in short it's just because they can, like why a hacker hacks, because they can that's their frill ride, like a chess game, they have the knowledge, how you going to stop them, problem with AI it's a learning tool, so everything you put in it's way, it'll find another way around, just like a human...

AI Overview

Bot swarms overwhelm websites by exhausting server resources. Each visit requires processing power, memory, and bandwidth. When thousands of bots rapidly perform actions like refreshing pages or submitting forms, they create traffic that forces the server to prioritize fake requests over legitimate users, leading to lag or crashes.
Several specific mechanics explain why this happens:

1. Resource Exhaustion
Every server has a maximum capacity for concurrent connections and processing tasks. When a bot swarm initiates massive amounts of traffic:
  • CPU and RAM Overload: Generating dynamic pages or rendering data requires the server to compute heavily. Massive request loads instantly consume these resources.
  • Database Bottlenecks: Bots frequently target search bars and catalogs. This forces the web server to query the database repeatedly, exhausting its connection pool.
  • Bandwidth Saturation: Massive volumetric attacks (commonly seen in DDoS) fill up the site's available internet connection with junk data, blocking all incoming and outgoing traffic.
  • DDoS Attacks: Malicious actors deliberately rent "botnets" (networks of compromised devices) to flood a target website, demanding ransoms or simply aiming to disrupt the business.

Slightly astray from the main topic/thread, but I use love watching these guys on their Youtube channel.

They went after the scammers, heavily got involved in disrupting their bitcoin scam market, where the scammers would prey on the vulnerable - they saved a lot of people a lot of money.

If you have the time they are worth a watch, shows how easily people can be persuaded to part with their money, and how the scammers trick you into downloading stuff or playing on your fears to part you from your hard earned life savings.

I learned a lot from these guys, in the sense of delete those financial threatening emails, they are playing on your conscience, don't download anything even if it appears genuine, resist that urge to click, don't be fooled by their phone calls...
