Would it be worth offering to Heckingbottom short term - he gets to have a look at us, we get to have a look at him, either party can pull the plug in the summer with no hard feelings.

Neither was I. Just going off what I read in the minutes. I still think he's who they want. He'd fit what has been said to be what they want. Wouldn't say he'd be my first pick but I wouldn't be anti him either. And it would be good from a PR point of view.

Absolutely not. 7 games to go with a squad absolutely shot to bits, any sensible person will sit tight until the summer and go from there.

I can see both sides of the argument. Not even sure whether it's something either party would consider.

I just have a nagging feeling we're going to be looking at him doing well next season and wondering.

I guess one unavoidable problem is that some fans seem to think that if you pay extra money there are risk-free appointments. The reality is nobody will know if the manager is a success or not until it happens. An out of work manager has as much chance of working out as an in work one.

So we can all say this appointment is important to get right (and of course it is), but throwing money at somebody and hoping that makes it right could end up just as bad as what some would band “cheap” options like Heckingbottom

I think speakman was careful to say any new man would be allowed to bring in an assistant(s) - paraphrasing the minutes there. I don’t think we’ll see have the incoming man overhauling the backroom staff.

I'd like to think so, hopefully they have identified the top candidates. I'm sure they will have also had conversations with candidates, even if their not supposed to.
I'd be disappointed if they weren't in a position to appoint someone as soon as possible

Christ I'm doing a Bob, this was supposed to be a reply to @Pure River Slut lol

There won't be wholesale changes, no. But this idea that the new man will have to have Dodds and Proctor as his assistants is inaccurate. There will be room for whoever comes in to bring his own people.

It's not about paying to get a manager out of a job, or getting a foreign manager, for me its about someone on an upward trajectory or with a cv that makes sense for the club. No matter the manager or the cv there is no guarantee of success, that's football, but getting managers coming in after repetitive failures doesn't give me confidence or justify effectively giving up the season (appointing Dodds) and taking multiple months to get someone in.

Nothing against Heckingbottom but hes been sacked at his last 3 jobs, two of which with no to little success. Granted got a promotion on his CV so fair play but also had a very strong squad and budget at this level following Sheff U's two years in the prem, his team was then embarrassed after promotion (tough job tbf but compare them to Lutons efforts). Mowbray and Neil both have better CV's than him imo so it would feel like a backward step to me, and as Ive posted previously, I'd doubt any of the teams looking to be promoted next season would look to get him in if their managers position were available in the summer.

Just my thoughts, but for context was happy with Moyes at the time and thought that made sense and he was the worst manager I've experienced. Thought Mowbray was underwhelming (although his CV made sense for the circumstances he came into) and he produced my favourite Sunderland team. If its Heckingbottom he gets my full support but wouldnt be on my shortlist personally.

Not a good squad and spent less than we have during his 2 championship seasons in charge.

Disagree about the squad, a couple of seasons prior Sheff U finished top half in the prem and other than Ramsdale, had no notable sales following relegation. Fair point on his spend (Id assume the wage budget was significantly higher than ours though) but did a good job to get them promoted regardless and thats a positive if we did appoint him, but feel this is a tougher job to get promoted with compared to Sheff U.

Wasn’t it said here that it’s definitely not Heckingbottom?

That's the worst idea you've had! These players are confused enough without another short term, let's see what it looks like kind of attempted fix.

No, the worst idea I had was drunkenly chatting up a suspiciously tall lady in Bangkok.
