Possibly because he only provides lists of players that we should consider signing but doesn't have the final say on who we sign. Then again it depends on what criteria he is given that shapes the type of players that we are looking at. Pure speculation by me of course
Back to the actual coaching, is there any chance we bite the bullet and appoint one now or before this season is done? We need someone now imo.
Certainly wasn't the plan. Dodds to end of season. That said, the rate of decline is rapid and they have an eye on season ticket renewals. Not to mention, if this continues, player form drops through the floor and their super high values dip too.
It's not all black & white for me. We're doing a lot right but too much wrong. Some of the recruitment has been the best we've seen for decades which shows we can get it right. Sadly some of the best have suffered injuries that have hurt us. But we need to be better at other things and, unless you believe the ridiculous conspiracy theories, would hope the club know as well as us what they are. Calling for the head of various people isn't going to work imo, the club won't jump every time the supporters decide they know best. We're not a 'club in crisis' ... we need the injured to return, two or three signings, a decent manager and get back to the football we've played before. It's all very frustrating and annoying but it's not the end of civilisation as we know it.
Fair point but id say we arent in crisis yet but could soon be pretty uncomfortable - Ironically self inflicted by the poor signings made in January and last summer as well as the woeful managerial appointment. If speakman and the owner make a hash of the next manager and don't adequately replace our outgoing best players next season will be a struggle imo. Do you trust them to kick us on?
not if they keep ridgit with the model they won't need to at least tweek it get some experienced players in too IMHO
I'm 100% certain the club want everything we do and know mistakes have been made. Players who've come in have been assessed and sent out of loan if they weren't as far on as we'd thought. Beale was sacked because the club realised it wouldn't work. Unless you believe this drivel, imo, that Speakman is only there to make KLD rich or whatever, you have to think the club want promotion and have a plan for when they get there. KLD is trying to advance the club, which he clearly has, although the team has slipped back, hopefully temporarily. He's doing this with a policy of keeping costs down and avoiding a build up of debt. That may not appeal to those who want 'flex' and 'reasonable extra spending' but I wouldn't want the owner to abandon his aims because we've had a poor few months. This isn't the time for chasing the prize by any means although I'm sure the owner is desperate to succeed ... ... if not for the supporters, which I'd hope, at least for his own standing and reputation.
I'm honestly not thinking about anything other than staying up - we probably need another 7 points. Not signing any proven players for this level in January is a huge gamble imo. The other issue is junior coaching staff in charge isn't filling me with any confidence either.
KLD is rich enough as it is, why would he be trying to make money out of the notorious money pit that is professional football? He's in a different league to someone like Methven. It seems clear to me that he has a plan for the club that ultimately leads to promotion and re-establishment in the Premier League. It also seems clear that he's trying to do that responsibly. However, you have to expect some setbacks along the way. This season hasn't panned out the way we all thought it would but that doesn't mean there is anything fundamentally wrong with the way KLD wants to do things.
It's been a bad few months, not years of being as bad as we recently were. I'm sure we'll be looking at signings now and assessing continually what we need. We brought Amad from a top PL club who had no intention of selling him. He was 20, 5'8" and had only played 19 games in his life. Massive success. We brought Burstow from a top PL club who had no intention of selling him. He was 20, 6'2" and had only played 18 games in his life. Massive failure. Amad was written off, by quite a few, but the club stuck by him. We've tried that with Burstow but he's proving just how difficult it is to get it right. Hopefully the next signing will be an Amad, not a Burstow. Quite a few clubs have found that to be the case .
At first team level it remains popular for a new coach to bring a team with him. Nuno has just done this at Forest. Glasner brought his team with him to Palace. Coaches dont work as individuals, they are a team and you build up trust with each other over time. Imperative for me you have your team around you as a coach. Doesnt mean Dodds cant stay, he can. But I doubt he can remain as assitant head coach in a new regime, at least if that new regime is elite level. He came in as head of individual player development. A role according to brum lads he is absolutely tailor made for. That said Mowbray said he was an excellent coach for him. He will need to take a step back from the number 2 role he has in my opinion, if he is guaranteed that job we will be fishing in a small pool of head coaches.
Stephen Reid and Andy Reid have been kept from previous regimes at Forest and Paddy McCarthy has been kept as assistant at Palace. All three of them started in lesser roles and have been promoted under different head coaches.
I think the reality is, whoever comes in will want to bring in their own people but there will be space for Dodds and Proctor somewhere in the setup.
Proctor has been part of the first team coaching group for a couple of years now, so it would make sense for him to stay there to provide some continuity for the new people coming in. It might make sense for Dodds to return to his role as Head of Individual Player Development as he was developing a good reputation there.
I know nothing about Proctor but Dodds has a proven track record of being an excellent coach. Neil tried to take him to Stoke, Mowbray complimented him on numerous occasions and reached out to him last week, Jude Bellingham has praised him. Be really stupid to not have him stay at the club. I'm not saying a new head coach shouldn't bring anyone in, they absolutely should, but if you look at the majority of appointments across football they retain coaches from previous regimes, because it works. All the evidence suggests that we allow head coaches to bring staff and make staff decisions. Neil even sacked the goalkeeper coach.
Totally agree. The idea that the next head coach won't be allowed to bring anyone in is based on nothing. If it's true that the club want Will Still, the idea that he won't be able to bring anyone in with him makes it a non-starter. The club will know this. As you say, Dodds has a good reputation, so it would be daft not to offer him some kind of role.
A few players back from injury and suspension will improve us except for our glaring issues. Injuries have been poor but as it stands I’d struggle to back us to stay up. That’s the difference between pre 2022 recruitment and the last 3/4 windows. It’s gone from amazing to poor and yet it’s the same people.
