Got to admire his determination to become the best in an era when he had to compete against three of the game's all time greats. He had years of consistently reaching semi finals in grand slams behind these three. Most would have settled for that but he pushed himself even harder until the slams arrived and then he got to No 1. Cruelly that is when his injury woes started at a point when I think he would have dominated and got the rewards for his hard work, as the other three were all struggling.

Btw hIs anti English quip which he was pilloried for was actually a response to banter against him re Scotland's performance.

Can't compare the two. Prior to the 'open' era, tournaments were either amateur or professional. Top players were split between the two, so Perry probably never actually competed against all the best.

The fact that he also held the world table tennis title is a remarkable feat, but don't you think it devalues the standards at that time?
Sounds like he was a bit of a successful serial shagger too, having flings with Marlene Dietrecht, Jean Harlow, Bette Davis and other prominent actresses.
All while starting his clothing company.
Bloody hell OLM, many would see you as a success achieving the latter, not sure you can compete with that though?

There is an English woman who won Wimbledon 7 times. Would have won it more but WW1interupted her career at its peak, but still returned to get to the first two finals after WW1 where she lost to the first non English woman to win it who in turn won it 6 times. The youngest ever player to win the women's title, and who won it 5 times, was English. The oldest player to win the women's title at Wimbledon was English, and also won it 5 times. Thing is nobody, including myself, could name them without googling.

Think it was Lettuce ernie. It's where the famous shake your lettuce quote comes from.
After winning the first set Lettuce started to break down with a severe case of the conniptions.
The umpire had to March down and a swift slap and a good shaking and she was right as rain.

Which is why it is ridiculous comparing previous generations. Fred Perry was good at the time but it was still ana amateur game, though he took a hard faced, professional approach to it. Can't compare then with the competition Murray has faced and won titles against.

Looking the toxic wasteland that is social media, some people are criticising him for being upset, suggesting he has no reason to be upset due to how much money he has, as if that makes up for the fact you can no longer do the thing you a) love, and b) have done your entire life, regardless of finance.

I was listening to talksport this morning on the drive to work and Alan Brazil was having a go at Murray, telling him to 'man up' - I find that an absolutely disgusting response, as a radio presenter who broadcasts to an audience largely consisting of males should know to be more careful. We already live in a society where men are scared of showing emotions and talking about mental health. At the same time, talksport is owned by The S*n, so I shouldn't be surprised in the ****ishness on show.

Murray has been a legend. To have won three slams in an era which saw him going toe-to-toe with the likes of Federer, Djokovic and Nadal, was an incredible achievement. I'd like to see him bow out at Wimbledon, but not if it means he's just there to make up the numbers, which could be the case right now.

His supposedly 'dour' personality means **** all; besides, nobody who actually who knows him personally has a bad word to say about him.
