It could easily have been a red, but it was our inability to get a second that cost us the points, not the ref.
It wasn't a trip at all, it was a frustrated kick out. So many players get red cards for the tiniest little contact. Cattermole just straight up booted him. How the **** is that consistent.
No one's blaming just the ref. I was highlighting that he completely bottled two obvious red cards. I'm well aware we still should have scored a 2nd against 11.
When you think back to the Tottenham game and how the game turned against us so suddenly from being 1-0 up when Ramirez was sent off, yet when it's the other way round in the same situation, 1-0 to us and Cattermole loses his head but gets away with it, they get back in the game with 11 men. It's hard not to feel robbed by that.
I thought Dean had a good game. Like it's been mentioned before it's nice to see a ref not conned every time a player hits the deck. As for the 2 "reds" in mention, I had the benefit of watching it online as I'm in Ireland, so I saw plenty of replays.
Bridcutts was a poor challenge, could have been red on another day but I think he gets away with it because he wins the ball and only really catches Jela with his trailing leg. The commentator said it was nasty and could easily be red but Jela just got up and got on with it.
The Cattermole one is never a red for me. It's not a kick out, it's a heel clip. If the situation is the same but closer to half way then I think you could have a conversation about red. Rooney got sent off for one earlier in the season but he kicked the lad across the thigh. If the boot was on the other foot I'd be fuming if one of ours was sent off for either challenge. If we'd have got a second we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I've so far not been able to find a replay but I saw it well. He didn't just stick a leg out and bring him down he booted him.
Perversely, if Meyler had just fouled him he'd have been sent off cos it'd have been seen as retaliation. I think he got the benefit of the doubt because he had nothing to be angry about. It's not a tackle or a trip though, it's simply violent conduct which is almost always a red for much more innocuous incidents than that. If that happened at Stoke or Palace the home fans would have made sure it was a red.
Seen on recorded live TV with slow replay I would rate the Bridcutt tackle as a Yellow plus and the Cattermole kick tackle as a Red minus.
Ref rating in a scruffy match B plus.
I'm sorry, but "booting him" is a slight exagerration. He tripped him, plain and simple.

If it's a trip I would agree but I don't think it was at all. Still haven't seen a replay so happy to be shown otherwise but from what I saw last night he just lost his head and kicked him.
I'd be surprised if we found a clip, but I'll see what I can find. I saw it as him getting dispossessed, realising there was a break on as a result and then trying to stop it. Meyler's reaction was completely unnecessary.
Everyone around me in the South West thought Bridcutt was a definite red; he jumped in with both feet. Cattermole's foul was a yellow, the afters was Meyler trying to provoke him.
Did anyone else see/hear Poyet's interview afterwards when he accused Macca of diving?...............Yeah, right, that's in his character!!!
Also, I was yelling for Elmo to go down for a pen in that second half. He got put through down the right channel and a defender came flying in from the left and caught him. Unlike Rooney, Elmo tried and succeeded in keeping his feet, crossed from the touchline but it came to nothing!! In my eyes he should have gone down as he was definitely clipped and put out of his stride which meant he crossed later than at the ideal time. Sometimes we are far too honest.

I thought the same...he was going like a bat out of hell and the challenge from the Sunderland player got no where near the ball...if he had gone over it would have been a pen....but we're not THAT streetwise.
What about Bridcutt's dive when he was already on a yellow?

I saw Macca dive and get a free kick , you must have missed it . I'm sure Gus didn't mention all the times his own players dived though .
Most importantly, which has annoyingly cost us 3 points, confirmed in the interview on the Sky Sports post match interviews. Rodwell actually handballed the ball into the net. Now I know how furious you all were when Elmo scored with his hand - this is equally as poor.
Was it early on when Larsson tackled him? I was at the other side but thought he went suspiciously high in the air and Larsson was fuming at him.
Oh come on, the ball was going in, it was just a piss poor header that he didn't need to touch that hit his hand, it's not like he did a hand of God or anything!

The new hand-ball rules omit the word "deliberate" as it is considered beyond the capabilities of a ref to deduce what is and isn't deliberate. What has been added to the rule is the phrase "Natural position" which means if a player has his hand in an unnatural position when the ball touches it, then it is hand-ball, whether he meant it or not in the eyes of the referee.
So whether the ball was going in anyway or whether it only just touched his arm are moot points, (not that at such an obtuse angle anyone could say in real time if it was going in anyway).
