How would I feel if I was a Reading fan and Di Canio got a 9 game contract today? Since I would have probably spent the last two days contemplating relegation, probably not too devastated. I actually think PDC will turn into a very good manager, and it could give them some hope. That said, I still wouldn't hold out much hope of survival, even though they are still in touch it's gonna take four miraculous wins to stay up.

How would I feel if I was a Reading fan and Mark Hughes, Iain Dowie or some Reading assistant manager got the job? Pretty devastated! In reality the damage for Reading was done when they did not strengthen in January, but perhaps sacking the manager was cheaper.

No way of knowing numbers but I have seen quite a lot of negative reaction from Reading supporters talking about Boycotts, demonstrations etc if he is given the job!!!

I just worry that it will be like the game last year where they parked the bus, soaked up all of substantial pressure, and then did a sucker punch three times. I felt like I'd been mugged

Soaked up the pressure yes but not sucker punched three times. A Fox hollywood ball gave them the first and Fonte dilly dallying the third. Even their second should have been sorted out. Shot ourselves in the foot as we panicked in the end of season pressure :(
 
They not only need at least 4 wins (in a tough run out) but have to hope others slip up....they have no chance...ridiculous decision as McDermott was fantastic in the Championship. Especially if they have no one to take over immediately. A pointless sacking which will cost them in a pay off to McD.

On Sky, they should have done it in January if they were going to do it and have a manager in immediately to replace him. Ummmm....didn't we do that and get slated for it!! Admittedly, we weren't quite in Reading's position.
 
Di Canio will keep them up IF appointed now.

QPR and Reading would both end up safe because of shrewd appointments when it mattered.
 
Plus the Swindon players wanted him gone as well, he isn't a good manager at all and Swindon fans like the new guy already .... And trixter no way would di canio keep reading up.... Just remember Paul Ince at Blackburn
 
It's not even a gamble though is it.

If Di Canio is a total flop then there is nothing lost as they were going down under Matt Lucas anyway.

I personally think Di Canio would prove to be a superb short term solution.

I agree [again], although it's exactly the same subject and reasoning as last time. Having sacked McDermott they could gamble on Di Canio, and he may galvanise the players. I doubt it, but it's certainly worth a shot.

Who's Matt Lucas..?

Why do you keep on saying that? How is it NOT a gamble?

There's more to football than the PL!!

Again, I repeat, Mick McCarthey and Wolves. How blind and biased do you have to be to not realise that plummetting down the Championship table following relegation is a whole lot worse than just relegation. A second relegation could cripple Wolves financially.

If you weren't a West Ham fan, or Di Canio hadn't played for West Ham, there is no way that you would be banging this drum. 18 months in L1 and L2 at Swindon does not automatically mean that he is capable of being a PL manager. And certainly there's is no way that I would ever claim that appointing him now would mean certain survival for Reading.

Please, just go away.

If something is a lost cause then where is the harm in one final throw of the dice to try and change things? They are 1/5 to go down with some bookies. Not a single person thought they could survive with McDermot in charge.

There would be no point in sacking McDermott and bringing in someone like Hughes or Curbishley. Neither of those would provide and instant spark, but Di Canio just might.

If it went wrong and they went down, they can look for a suitable replacement in the summer who could get the club challenging for promotion and be considered a bit more of a long term appointment.

As for McCarthy, i see that as a different situation. I'm pretty sure wolves weren't even in the bottom 3 when he left. they still had a real fighting chance of survival. His sacking could have possibly been justified if they had a replacement agreed but they didnt. They just assumed there would be a flood of applicants which never materialized.

I don't know if an agreement was already in place with Di Canio or Adkins before McDermot's sacking. If there was, then I think they have made the right move. If not however, and there is no plan in place, I agree it is a mistake.

Reading will have a good chance of survival if they put Di Canio in charge straight after they lose to Man Utd.

And there was absolutely no need for your last comment.
 
I don't believe that rubbish about the players not wanting di Canio...they will be circumspect...players always want to keep in with a new manager. Remember there was supposed to be a players' revolt over Mauricio.

But I think that is something in his favour Lambo. He would come in, guns a blazing, fired up, raw and determined to make a point. That approach in the short term would be of much more use than someone like Curbishley of Hughes, who might be good appointments for a promotion push next season, but wouldn't give them an instant boost IMO.
 
Morning Trix. It's a fair point and I think it might work short term in Div 1 but not in the PL. You need more than just passion.
