Despite my earlier comments about McClaren, I rarely celebrate when we sack a manager and I won't be celebrating on this occasion. Notwithstanding the awful, awful run of results, often against poor opposition, I was still a little surprised by the timing of his dismissal. We did get a number of good away wins, including one at Notts Forest, and a very welcome cup run. However, I didn't have much confidence that he could sort out the squad, team and tactics during the Summer but it might have been fair (but fatal) to give him a shot at doing so. I guess the very real threat of relegation to League One understandably prompted action from the Board.
With regard to his replacement....
With regard to his replacement....
- I liked what Warburton did, or contributed to, during his time at Brentford and, building on that base, they have become an established Championship side, unearthing some very useful players in the process, with a realistic chance of promotion to the EPL.
- I don't particularly know Rowett's record or style of play but it seems to me that he has created/developed a couple of decent teams.
- I'd hate to tarnish my memories of Gareth Ainsworth by appointing him: he seems the sort who might be very enthusiastic and motivational but not a deep tactical thinker or technical coach.
- Wagner is a good shout: success on a budget.
- All of the above have achieved something in the game. Sherwood has achieved nothing. Equally, I don't want any of yesterday's men - dinosaurs (Pardew, Moyes, Holloway) - even if they would deign to come to Loftus Road; or egotistical nutters (Barton, Sherwood again, or an unpredictable Holloway).
- Speaking of egotistical nutters, no-one has mentioned Nigel Pearson (recently released by OH Leuven) yet. He wouldn't stand for any nonsense and, of course, he created gold from relative dross at Leicester. I'll go and get my tin hat.
- Danny Cowley had passed under my limited radar but his record, detailed above by Quite Possibly Raving, has me salivating.
