Despite my earlier comments about McClaren, I rarely celebrate when we sack a manager and I won't be celebrating on this occasion. Notwithstanding the awful, awful run of results, often against poor opposition, I was still a little surprised by the timing of his dismissal. We did get a number of good away wins, including one at Notts Forest, and a very welcome cup run. However, I didn't have much confidence that he could sort out the squad, team and tactics during the Summer but it might have been fair (but fatal) to give him a shot at doing so. I guess the very real threat of relegation to League One understandably prompted action from the Board. With regard to his replacement.... I liked what Warburton did, or contributed to, during his time at Brentford and, building on that base, they have become an established Championship side, unearthing some very useful players in the process, with a realistic chance of promotion to the EPL. I don't particularly know Rowett's record or style of play but it seems to me that he has created/developed a couple of decent teams. I'd hate to tarnish my memories of Gareth Ainsworth by appointing him: he seems the sort who might be very enthusiastic and motivational but not a deep tactical thinker or technical coach. Wagner is a good shout: success on a budget. All of the above have achieved something in the game. Sherwood has achieved nothing. Equally, I don't want any of yesterday's men - dinosaurs (Pardew, Moyes, Holloway) - even if they would deign to come to Loftus Road; or egotistical nutters (Barton, Sherwood again, or an unpredictable Holloway). Speaking of egotistical nutters, no-one has mentioned Nigel Pearson (recently released by OH Leuven) yet. He wouldn't stand for any nonsense and, of course, he created gold from relative dross at Leicester. I'll go and get my tin hat. Danny Cowley had passed under my limited radar but his record, detailed above by Quite Possibly Raving, has me salivating.
I'd rather a manager challenged by a 'step up' as opposed to an experienced has been 'stepping down' for a final pay cheque.
Quite. And he managed the step up from non-league to League Football rather well. I can't see why he wouldn't manage another step up - football is a simple game, after all. Wish I hadn't found out about him now, as I'm just going to be dissapointed when we appoint someone crap.
To give due credit, I knew nothing about him until QPR247 put him forward as an option. Just piqued my interest so I went away and read a few online items [yes, wiki included!] and came away very impressed.
According to the Times we had a break clause in McClaren’s two year contract which means we only have to pay him until the end of the season. Hurrah. According to the same source we are already talking to Sherwood and Rowett and Warburton are also on the list. FFS.
Clive's take on things......quite damning Former England manager Steve McClaren lost his job as QPR boss after less than a year in charge this morning, paying the price for ignoring the remit his was given at appointment in favour of senior pros who let him down. Steve McClaren talked in ever-glowing terms about the four senior players he was allowed to add to his squad at the end of August. In the end, and in three cases through no fault of their own, they’ve cost him his job. Geoff Cameron arrived on loan from Stoke, Nahki Wells was borrowed from Burnley, Tomer Hemed came in temporarily from Brighton, and Angel Rangel signed on a free transfer after a glittering decade at Swansea City. As they walked across the training ground in the August sunshine to join a beleaguered squad that had, for the first time in the history of the club, lost its first four league matches of the season, McClaren proudly declared to his coaches that we now had “a team of men”. And quite correct. Sending so many of our promising youngsters out on loan in January continues to bemuse me most of all. Was this primarily SM's call? If so, it's amazing he lasted as long as he did (remember those comments from Amit after Rotherham). Or were the club desperately trying to reduce overheads to cover the cost of our own loanees that weren't previously budgeted for.
Lee Bowyer is the new name been spoken about currently...thats a lot better, he has done wonders at Charlton...but like Jackett why would he join us (not quite like Jackett as I can see Pompey being promoted, slightly less so with Charlton). Have I mentioned ....anyone but Sherwood
The only reason Sherwood is linked to us is because he's SLF's mate. That is a terrible reason and I hope the board are not that stupid.
Bowyers entered the betting and is now 2nd favourite. Lets hope the rumours that Sherwood is worried we have no money to whitter away is true and he is not interested are true too!
Does it really matter who we get in? Whoever the lucky chap is, he’ll be gone before Xmas and we’ll run this thread again
