Having worked in the betting industry myself I can assure you it wouldn't, head office only get alerted when there are large bets placed. No betting shop is going to ring up and alert betting control if they've taken a few fivers and tenners on Mata moving

But there's a difference between a few fivers/tenners and a million fivers/tenners. If say 500k people stick a fiver each on Rooney to Madrid in the next day then the odds will change, surely?

Juan Mata move to Manchester United on hold as Atletico Madrid tempt Moyes with Filipe Luis and Diego Costa
Atletico Madrid are ready to offer striker Diego Costa and defender Filipe Luis to David Moyes if Manchester United drop their attempt to sign Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata

The plot thickens....

Costa has been valued at 30 million and as much as you need players a striker surely isn't top of the list?

If the bookies took that many small bets across all there shops, they wouldn't even realise until after the event, as the small bets are not reported. It is the big players that move the markets. For Mata to have shortened up, they would have had to have taken some serious bets on him moving

Fair enough, you know more than I do. But I still wouldn't base a player moving on some odds shortening.

I don't think it's a secret that Rooney will be off in the summer though.

With Rooney off and RVP back to his always injured ways then we would definetly need a striker <ok>

I don't think a striker is what we need this window, but I agree we will most likely need one in the summer. If Rooney is so set on leaving in the summer, I don't understand why we don't just give him to Chelsea for Mata, as we aren't going to get 40m for Rooney then as he'll only have a year left on his contract. I don't want Rooney to leave, but if a player genuinely wants to leave then I've always said they should be allowed to

Agreed.

Actually we need to rebuild. Mata will/may be good top acquisition but we do need an imposing midfielder like keane or robson (or Y Toure) who can get the team going when the going gets rough...

We need to have at least 3 top strikers. Welbeck and Hernandez may come in but they are not part of that small elite of very best. City have Aguero, Negredo, Dzeko who could probably walk into any premiership team. Rooney and RVP have been out and we absolutely have no cutting edge.

If true, why wouldn't Atletico just offer us Costa given we clearly are in the hunt for a striker? The 2 players are probably worth similar money so near enough straight swap. Anyway as I understand it, Atletico will probably have to sell Costa regardless to service debt so probably can't afford Mata anyway.

Mata will be better off going to City if he wants to actually challenge for trophies, he won't get that by going to United.
