So you think someone racially abusing a player in front of the squad shouldn't be charged? To me, I can't comprehend that.

I would definitely not describe a libertarian as "on the left" - quite the opposite in fact, but that's not really a discussion for this thread!

Abuse is intolerable

That was my first reaction too but there is a left branch of libertarianism. I'm not a fan of libertarianism at all in any shape or form, however. But yeah, that's a whole other topic as you say.

Are you being sarcastic? I know you've got a big problem with me, so it's difficult to tell. Apologies if you're being serious.

Those sorts of jokes are morally distasteful, but in a private context your choices are your own. It's the abuse that is totally unacceptable and, indeed, illegal. I'm surprised people on here defending this don't realise there is a potential for criminal charges.

No, I agreed wholeheartedly and appreciated your comments. Like you, quite surprised by some responses.

Well said Rob. Indefensible. Is there a bigger marker for being an absolute stain on humanity than telling or laughing at a racist, sexist or homophobic joke? That and enjoying the atmosphere in a Weatherspoons.

I must be the scum of the earth then as I hear and laugh at such jokes every day of the week and I also enjoy a visit to Wetherspoons. I am also a man of the left and strongly feel that personal freedom and freedom of speech are far more important than all of the PC crap now being rammed down our throats. We might be talking at cross purposes but if I'm walking down the street and see an overtly gay person on the other pavement and shout an offensive word at him then I should have the book thrown at me. If I say quietly to a friend ' look at that ***** ' surely that is different.

1950 - I think we're almost on the same page, without realising it! You've just said yourself the book should be thrown at him because that is the sort of thing Mackay was doing according to the allegations (as well as the texts).

As for whispering to your mate - no I don't think it is ok, really, I'm not a fan of prejudice, but that would be you doing something privately and I agree you are well within your rights to make your own decision on that one.

I have fairly close gay friends. It doesn't bother me if people make gay jokes.I don't have black friends but that is probably because of where I live.OK I probably should have said liberal.Malky was brought up in working class Glasgow. He isn't going to share the prissy mores of the metropolitan middle classes. That's the hard facts of working class life. It's not romantic being poor.

I thought we'd moved beyond the "I'm not _____, I have plenty of _____ friends" response.

It's not like we've not had any celebrities revealed to be horrible human beings behind a charming public façade recently. As this story develops I guess we'll see whether this is another one. Hopefully things don't turn out to be as bad as they're being portrayed at the moment, as like many others I loved him as a player here.

I wonder how they got hold of the private texts? It seems a distinct possibility that someone has been phone hacking on Tan's behalf. The more I hear of this the more inclined I am to back Malky.

I believe they were on a works phone, and they were seized as part of the investigation into financial irregularities surround Moody's time at Cardiff. I believe it has been alleged he was somehow financially benefiting from the way the club's transfer funds were used. Not sure if Malky was thought to be involved in that or not.

Anything else that's come out since wasn't the original aim.

All we can do really is wait and see, he's admitted the sexist remarks but denied the rest hasn't he?

It'll all come out in the fullness of time I expect, I'll reserve condemning the guy until then
