Man City won't get 90pts, they're currently on 83pts with a possible maximum of 86pts.

Both games been us and Man City took place after losing various players too; we drew and lost. If (big if) we won both those games, they'd only be on 79pts now.

Yes they are and what have their results been as they rotated and used their lead up to go for the cl?

Lots to leeds, brighton, chelsea, utd?

They have taken the foot off, and are not even near as good upfront as they used to be but are defensively solid.

But ok say they got 86. We were on 32 after 15. Same points rate = 81 and that's second as I said and it's certainly not us walking the league;)

We would have taken more out of the games between us imo. That's less points for them and more for us.

All ifs, buts and excuses though isn't it. Can't change what's happened.

No. It would have been a bit.more entertaining for the masses rather than watching agent ole say they were not in a title race then the following week say they are but never get close.

How the hell did we manage to finish top 4 when our defence (and subsequently our midfield) were decimated all throughout the season

It did take a few too many games to get Fabinho back in midfield though.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but yeah, if only Klopp trusted Kabak / Phillips / Rhys more and move Fab back into midfield sooner. But I think at the time, Fabinho was doing a decent job so it made sense.

I'm just glad that Klopp did make the decision sooner rather than later. Over the last 10 games, Fab and Thiago formed an immense partnership in the midfield which provided more protection to the defence and gave Thiago and Trent a platform to create. We created a lot of chances over this period (at the expense of the defence) but it was a risk that paid off .

This shouldn't come as a surprise but our attack during the middle 14 games was atrocious.

Defensively, Allison was excellent in the last 10 games to goals down to a minimum.

    Expected numbers (attack):

First 14 games: scored 36 from 29 XG
    Middle 14 games: scored 11 from 21 xg (!!!)
Last 10 games: scored 21 from 22.3 XG

    Expected numbers (defence):
First 14 games: conceded 19 from 18.4 xg
Middle 14 games: conceded 17 from 17.5 xg
Last 10 games: conceded 6 from 11.4 xg

Wasn't Alisson injured for a number of games as well?

I remember he was injured last season but can't remember this season? I could be wrong ... this season feels like it's lasted for an eternity!

Alisson was indeed heroic on many occasions. Don;t need made up stats like xg to tell us that. his ability one on one is spectacular but he holds everything.

the isse with the middle 14 is not only low goals scored but that of those goals if you look most game in a few games. like spurs and west ham. when a side was open we could get some goals. The defence in the middle 14 games was not awful, it was losing by the odd goal sec fulham, brighton southampton etc.

southampton beat us 0-1 with a fluky flick form ings after trent sort of lost his position on a free and Henderson pulled too many players towards the back stick. Very small overall errors but we might as well have played for 10 hours we wouldn't have scored.

We had no jota atthe time and had no midfield drive but most of all teh forwards were very poor.

I am very hopeful we will change a couple faces in the front 6 (origi and shaqiri) A young gun coming in to really run about and score goals will freshen us up.

A no 8 who can run into the box would also be nice.

Kelleher and Adrian deffo played a number of games this season.

Looks like Alisson missed 8 games in total (including cup)

    I'd turn it round and say this;

What ****wit decided to leave it to deadline day in Feb to get kabak and davies?

If one was gotten jan 1 this debate would be very different

Agreed. We should have had a defender in as soon as the window was opened. It felt like we were content with using Fab and Matip at the back, but once Matip was injured for rest of the season, then we had no choice. Very reactive decision making from our part.

yes but even at that matip's last game was the 28th jan. We had him out with groin injury v newcastle, then rushed back, we had him out 4 times prior to that in the season playing only 50% of the games.

to not buy on jan 1 was sackable and is still sackable imo.

FSG were banking on Klopp doing what he always does ... perform miracles. We were incredibly lucky to get top 4 this season and I hope we are never in this situation again where we literally had no senior centre backs.

Matip was suffering with a recurrent ankle injury and having to play more games than he would normally play was exacerbating the problem to the
point where JK had to just get it sorted.
