I think you are confusing two different things here, we should be buying players that fits a managers requirements but the manager needs to be a little flexible with the actual player.
The last 10 years we had a CeO buying names with no thought to fit and (i believe) very little manager in-put.
I get your point. But what if that player is viewed by TH as essential to his vision? Why does the manager then select a much lesser player who maybe just adequate but does not quite fulfill the key role he has planned?
The problem is that it then signals to all the other clubs who we're negotiating with for other players that we'll eventually buckle every time.
Not saying we shouldn't just pay the whole fee for De Jong, just that it's understandable to have mixed feelings about the whole thing.
If Barca do need that money to fund the Silva purchase then there'll be at least some sweet pay off they're shooting themselves in the foot by maintaining such a hardline stance.
I don't believe there are many "must have" players in the world (if any), a manager might have a vision/system but there are usually many players that can fit every position, it's just a case of identifying them (sounds easy when i say it
).In the grand scheme of transfers, €89m is actually not that much money for a player that you claim to want to build around. Just fkin useless drama that makes the club look like bunch of clowns are running it.
Agree with you here, do you go all out to "build around" a player that could get a career threatening injury in his first game (can happen to any player at any time) or build around a position/formation that you can slot somebody else into.
Of course your system should not be dependent on a single player able to play it. But it does give you a better chance if that player has played exactly the system you want before and is excellent at it. There is no knowing of course that the player may get injured and therefore another similarly skilled player may be needed. Ruben Neves apparently could be a replacement should Utd fail with DeJong. But here is the irony: Wolves are asking the same fee (if not more) for Neves. So hard almost certainly unsuccessful bargaining for the player you want and failing that gettting a second choice at a higher price. Utd’s recruitment strategy has never followed logical lines
So again why not just pay the asking price and avoid the whole public drama?

I didn’t not even see how Evanilson would cost half of €70m. Even if he came on a free, it would not be worthy of celebration. lol
Agents and selling clubs must be rubbing their hands to pay YouTubers to put up videos and quickly link players to United. The price targets automatically get inflated by 150%.
Nobody has the inside track on who the club intends to buy, that's the only absolute fact to rely on.

We are going to sign players, my real concern is that we will still have the likes of Martial, Jones and Bailly still on the books - FFS we can't even get another loan deal for Martial. Martial and Bailly are malcontents and the last thing we need going into a fresh season under the new manager is those two stirring it up on the training ground. Get rid of both of these and I'd be happy to see a couple of new signings and then promote some of our excellent U23 players into the first team - I seem to remember it went well the last time we tried it.

I’m with promoting the U23 players myself. I would very much prefer that option to simply throwing money around. We should not be buying five players. Maybe three at most, and then use next season to groom the talented young players.
I wouldn’t recommend that we buy beyond our valuation. But the messages from the club/Arnold have been mixed. One minute we were annoyed that the club was being quoted an overinflated price and the next we were targettting their financial woes. So which is it? Over valuation or bargain hunting?
I don’t know which it is, but I know for sure that we are terrible at negotiating transfers or at least communicating the strategy to the fans.

Steve McClaren has hit out at players who show negative body language and energy as he talks about its effects on building a winning culture within a club in the latest episode of the podcast he has with his son.
That interview nails the major barrier that the new regime needs to strongly focus us. The culture has to be transformed and I’m glad that some of the terrible apples that have facilitated that negativity are gone. But we could all see it last season that there was zero unity in that squad. I am really looking forward to Ten Hag shaking the culture up and start holding players fully accountable to by into a functional system that places team above everything else.

It was released to the press last week that there had been two players who were leaking things about the "goings on" inside the dressing room that have now left the club. This little piece of info came out around the same time as Pogba and Lingard left.
It’s all shambles! So far, there’s nothing to suggest otherwise. Of course I hope we can start to see indication of a new program coming together. Until then, we are still a “show me” club when it comes to transfers.

What do you mean by “the press”? You’re characterizing that as though anything and everything in the press is just simply purely speculation. This is clearly not the case.
Yes, the are a lot of speculation in the columns, but there has also never been a time that a deal was done by Manchester United in particular, and it wasn’t first revealed in the press. The trick is identifying which ones are noise and which ones are credible. Like the Evanilson case; that was clearly trash talk. Therefore, we cannot simply take everything in the press as gossip, but we also must master when there is credit to a story.
