We are immensely saddened to learn of the passing of Sunderland AFC legend Len Ashurst.

Our thoughts are with Len's family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

A no nonsense full back who was part of the great 'Hurley' era team. He joined us because as part of his deal we found him a job to continue his apprenticeship as a printer. RIP Len, you left us 'oldies' with lots of wonderful memories.

Actually it was Len who insisted on the job as part of the deal because he wasn't sure he would make it as a full time professional. He got that bit wrong thankfully.

I know but, as a kid under 10, anyone involved with my football club was a hero to me! Players, managers, chairmen.

I think Len was forgiven for his management failure due to his stature as a player. Surely you didn't like the next manager ?

Quite right. So hard he made Joe Bolton look like a right pansy but never 'dirty' and yes, such a gent off the pitch.

Loved the way he took no prisoner's, i'm sure len and joe bolton were related, in some way, down the track.
He is a true sunderland hero R.I.P LEN ASHURST.

At first, I thought it was great….. Local lad. Come from a good position at Southampton… then destroyed us!! But I loved the third division in 87/88. One of my favourite seasons! I have him to thank for putting us there. I was starting to know more about it by then as well.
