The latter part of that is wrong, Lallana is easily Champions League quality as you'll see for yourself at the World Cup and as his peers in the Premier League did by voting him in the PFA Premier League team of the year.

Lallana vs Coutinho in 2013/14 Premier League season

Lallana has...

- more goals
- higher pass accuracy
- more aerial duels won
- more interceptions per game
- blocks more shots per game
- more dribbles per game
- more crosses per game

Liverpool should be concentrating on sorting out their defence (which has conceded more goals than Saints) first rather than their attack that has scored over 100 goals.

99 <ok>

We will not accept £20 mill for Lallana. If he goes it will be for a massive sum.

Then I think most of us will hope it doesn't happen then, we wouldn't want to waste a massive chunk of our budget on one player when there is just as good abroad for at least half the price.

I didn't say solely in the Premier League, I just said over 100 goals.

You defence should be more of a concern, as it has conceded more than ours.

And that was how I expected you to get out of it <laugh>

The defence does need attention but not as much as people think. The reason we concede so many is due to the way we play, the tactics we employ. We go all out attack and leave massive holes; both FBs play as wingers when in possession, we don't employ a DM and the two CBs push out wide almost to the FBs position. We are set up perfectly for a counter-attacking side. As good as Gerrard as been this season, he doesn't suit the current style IMO.

We need defenders and a DM.
If we blew our budget on players like Lallana (much as I like him) we'd have the same problem as this season.
We'd be scoring a ****load of goals, but we'd need to because we'd be letting them in all over the shop.

There's precious little wrong with our attack, and imo, we shouldn't even be considering making offers for any more forward thinking players until we've addressed the weaknesses at the back.

Absolutely agree we need to improve the defensive side of our team and we have a very good attack but beyond the first eleven, there is nothing. With CL football secured, we need numbers and options.

I do think we desperately need a wide left forward or winger though, hence probably Konoplyanka. Would prefer a Reus though.

Yes, we need a stronger squad. But we can't use up a large part of our budget on one player in an area where we are strong. We couldn't pay a huge transfer fee and wage for someone like Lallana, only for him to be on the bench, or else replace a current player who'll then be in that situation.
We can only play 11 at a time, and we have to prioritise the weaker areas. We have some decent loanees and younger players that we'll have to rely on for squad depth, atm.
It's pointless to compare our squad with the likes of City and Chavs because we don't have their spending power.
If we do well in the CL for 2 or 3 years then things might change, but we must give urgent priority to plugging the gaps, imo.

Completely agree about not blowing a large part of the budget on Lallana but not so much with not spending on another attacker. Attackers and options win games, take one of the quartet out (Suarez, Studge, Sterling or Coutinho) and we look very slim. I expect us to buy one or two attackers but most of the budget should, as you rightly said, go on defensive options.

Haven't watched much of the Saints outside of MOTD, but isn't he primarily an attacking midfielder? If we are going to spend money on midfield, shouldn't we be looking at DM or box-to-box beasts? From what I've seen, Dalai lama looks like a talent and would thrive in our set up, but that is a luxury we should think of only when everything else is sorted.
